LEGAL MAILBAG

The Legal Mailbag column is written by Attorney Thomas Mooney of the University of Connecticut's Neag School of Education. Readers are invited to submit short, law-related questions of practical concern to school administrators. One question and its answer will be published in this column each week. Questions may be edited; authors will
not be identified; and answers cannot be considered formal legal advice. Please submit questions to: legalmailbag@casciac.org

Dear Legal Mailbag:
lm_2.jpgI have a student who audio recorded a teacher in a classroom for the express purpose of getting the teacher in trouble. The student’s complaint was that the teacher was not adequately supervising an “annoying” student who repeatedly disrupts the class. The student who made the recording had come to the administration previously to complain about this teacher’s classroom management. In response, a paraprofessional had been put in the classroom, and one student was removed.

cherese_miller.jpgCAS WELCOMES NEW STAFF MEMBER

This summer, we welcomed a new staff member to the CAS-CIAC team. On July 1, Cherese Miller joined the central office staff as co-director of student activities. She will be working side-by-side with longtime director of student activities, Dave Maloney. Cherese’s career as an educator began during her college years at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU). Initially a marketing major, her experiences working as a substitute teacher at Prince Technical High School ignited a passion for education and for improving the lives of youth. She subsequently changed her major so that she could focus her studies on becoming an educator. Upon graduating from CCSU, she earned her master’s degree in education at Springfield College (MA). She continued working at Prince Tech and, over her fourteen years there, served in a variety of roles. In addition to teaching English, career development and student leadership, she served as athletic director and coached multiple sports. CAS is thrilled to have Cherese on board to help us promote and expand student activities, both athletic and non-athletic!
