LEGAL MAILBAG

The Legal Mailbag column is written by Attorney Thomas Mooney of the University of Connecticut's Neag School of Education. Readers are invited to submit short, law-related questions of practical concern to school administrators. One question and its answer will be published in this column each week. Questions may be edited; authors will not be identified; and answers cannot be considered formal legal advice. Please submit questions to: legalmailbag@casciac.org

lm_2.jpgDEAR LEGAL MAILBAG:
In case you didn’t notice, it’s election time. As if it wasn’t bad enough that the campus was being littered with campaign signs from the summer primary, I recently noticed that a candidate for state office has used school property and images of my school in his campaign literature. As the principal of the school and its leader, I’d rather not be affiliated with any candidate. I know schools are public property. However, I am concerned that the images of the school may give voters the wrong impression.

csde.pngGRANT OPPORTUNITY FOR DISTRICT SPECIAL ED ADMINISTRATORS

CAS is pleased to announce the availability of a grant to support special education administrators. The grant program, a joint initiative of CAS and the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE), was established two years ago in response to frequent reports from practitioners indicating that special education administrators would benefit greatly from the support of an executive coach with special education expertise. Districts are invited to apply for a grant that will provide them with a coach at no cost. The deadline for submission of applications is November 20, 2018.

isc.pngSOCIAL MEDIA DO’S AND DON’TS: MANAGING KIDS’ DEVICES!

Scott Driscoll, founder of Internet Safety Concepts, will be at CAS on November 7th to share his vast knowledge of the pitfalls of social media. What sets Scott apart from other social media presenters is his background as a youth officer in a suburban police department where he worked closely with schools. A skilled “techie” with a good understanding of public school policies and procedures, Scott employs clear and understandable terminology and a bit of levity to deliver an engaging and frank presentation on the challenges of managing the social media landscape in a school setting.
