LEGAL MAILBAG

The Legal Mailbag column is written by Attorney Thomas Mooney of the University of Connecticut's Neag School of Education. Readers are invited to submit short, law-related questions of practical concern to school administrators. One question and its answer will be published in this column each week. Questions may be edited; authors will not be identified; and answers cannot be considered formal legal advice. Please submit questions to: legalmailbag@casciac.org

lm_2.jpgDEAR LEGAL MAILBAG:
As a principal, I think that most of the employees in my building are great, but there are a few who fall short of my high expectations. When they do fall short, I like to sit them down and talk through what they did wrong. Last week, I called one of my teachers down to my office for one of these little chats. She showed up on time, but she surprised me when the meeting started by demanding union representation before she would talk to me. With that, she got up to leave.

perry_zirkel.pngEDUCATION LAW SPECIALIST PERRY ZIRKEL TO SPEAK ON 504, ADA

Many educators struggle with the legal requirements for students with disabilities. Much in-service legal professional development related to special education is on the requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which sometimes leaves Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act as a misunderstood and often misapplied law. Register today for 504, the ADA, and Public School Students: The Latest Lessons for General and Special Educators on May 2nd at the Red Lion in Cromwell. Presenter Perry Zirkel, Ph.D., J.D., LL.M, University Professor Emeritus of Education and Law at Lehigh University, will address the confusion between 504 and IDEA requirements by exploring issues related to the latest 504- and ADA-related legal lessons.
