LEGAL MAILBAG

The Legal Mailbag column is written by Attorney Thomas Mooney of the University of Connecticut's Neag School of Education. Readers are invited to submit short, law-related questions of practical concern to school administrators. One question and its answer will be published in this column each week. Questions may be edited; authors will not be identified; and answers cannot be considered formal legal advice. Please submit questions to: legalmailbag@casciac.org

lm_2.jpgDEAR LEGAL MAILBAG:
A student at my school was recently suspended for his behavior. Some parents in the community have taken to social media to express their concerns with the incident and to speculate over the “rumored” consequences. However, one parent wrote on social media that the student is protected under IDEA and will not receive consequences. This comment has sparked Internet controversy and agitation.

ssace.pngSTUDENTS SEEK FEEDBACK ON EDUCATOR DIVERSITY

The State Student Advisory Council on Education (SSACE), a group of high school students who meet monthly under the direction of CAS and the CSDE to provide student perspectives on critical education issues, is currently working on formulating realistic solutions to address the lack of educator diversity in Connecticut schools. As part of its research, it is conducting a short (5-7min) survey and would greatly appreciate your feedback on the state of educator diversity in your school.
