PLEASE ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO COMPLETE EMOTION REVOLUTION SURVEY

The Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation have announced a joint initiative called Emotion Revolution, the goal of which is to start a national conversation that encourages schools to integrate social and emotional learning (SEL) into their curriculums and build more positive school climates. In order to get the ball rolling, the partners have launched an anonymous online survey that asks high school students from around the country to reveal how they currently feel in school, how they want to feel, and what they believe needs to happen to bridge the gap between the two. The survey does not require parental consent. Click below for an informational letter and a flyer that can be distributed in your school or district.

LEGAL MAILBAG

The Legal Mailbag column is written by Attorney Thomas Mooney of the University of Connecticut's Neag School of Education. Readers are invited to submit short, law-related questions of practical concern to school administrators. One question and its answer will be published in this column each week. Questions may be edited; authors will not be identified; and answers cannot be considered formal legal advice. Please submit questions to: legalmailbag@casciac.org

Dear Legal Mailbag:
My school district is quite affluent, and parents here are quite engaged in their children’s education, which has its blessings and its challenges. One of the challenges here is the constant discussion of grades. I am used to the questions and complaints, and most of the time I am able simply to hold the line against requests and even demands as parents appeal to me to change a grade they think is too low. Sometimes, however, parents have a valid claim.
