DON’T MISS MONDAY’S WORKSHOP ON SUPPORTING LGBT YOUTH

Join us on Monday, October 5th, to learn from regional and national experts how to support LGBT students in all areas of school life. "Supporting LGBT Youth: Their Journey in Our Schools" will examine strategies for building an LGBT-inclusive school community. Co-sponsored by CAS, CABE and CAPSS, this half-day workshop will cover legal and policy implications for meeting the needs of LGBT students.

CAS WELCOMES MARIE GLOWSKI TO CENTRAL OFFICE

We are thrilled to introduce the newest member of our central office team! Marie Salazar Glowski has just joined the central office staff as assistant executive director and co-director of the executive coaching program. Marie’s extensive experience includes eleven years as the CT State Department of Education English Language Learner-Bilingual Consultant. As CAS’ new co-director of executive coaching, she is eager to use her experience in supervision and evaluation and her passion for supporting all students with a particular focus on special education students and English-language learners.

CCSS LEADERSHIP COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE REGISTRATION OPENS

The CT Core State Standards Leadership Community of Practice is back! Now in its third year, this eight-session professional development series, sponsored by the Connecticut State Department of Education and CAS, is designed to assist schools and districts in the effective implementation of the CT Core Standards. Whether you participated last year or are a newcomer, you are most welcome to join us this year. The series is offered without charge to school and district leaders and includes morning refreshments and lunch.

CALLING ALL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT LEADERS AND YET TO BE LEADERS!

The 2015 CT Student Leadership Conference (CSLC) is the perfect place for high school students from every facet of student life – athletes, artists, community servants, student council members, diversity champions, academics, employed, eager future leaders, untapped potential and more - to hone skills, be inspired, build networks and expand their capacity to lead change at school, at home and in life. This year’s conference will be held on November 20th and 21st in East Hartford and will feature an impressive lineup of national speakers.

CAS NEW LEADERS ACADEMY - GATEWAY TO SUCCESS!

Hiring a new assistant principal? Assuming your first position as a principal? Know of a new colleague coming into your district's leadership ranks? CAS offers the New Leaders Academy to help new administrators avoid the pitfalls that are common in the first year or two of school leadership. Come and join us for any one of five presentations and facilitated discussions: Hiring for Success; Difficult Conversations to Facilitate Change; Leading for Mastery-Based Learning; Leveraging Social Media; and, Discovering Your Leadership Style. All sessions are held at CAS and are half-day in length. Best of all, they are offered at no cost to administrators from CAS-member schools!

NOW ACCEPTING NOMINATIONS FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL OF THE YEAR AWARD

The CAS Middle Level Board has opened nominations for the 2016-2017 CAS Middle School of the Year Award. The purpose of this award is to give recognition to an outstanding CAS member middle school that represents the best in the profession. Nominations may be made by any present or former member of the school staff or by central office personnel. The deadline for submitting nominations is February 26, 2016.

CTAHPERD OFFERS WORKSHOPS ON ACTIVE CLASSROOMS

On November 19th, CTAHPERD is offering a full-day workshop for administrators and classroom teachers. “Brain-Based Learning Through Movement” will feature nationally recognized speakers and will offer workshops such as The Physically Active Classroom, Yoga 4 Classrooms, Math and Movement, and Moving Matters.

CT CORE STANDARDS FOR EDUCATORS OF ENGLISH LEARNERS AND STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES

In partnership with the Connecticut State Department of Education, Public Consulting Group (PCG) will present a professional development series for school teams who create inclusive environments and share instruction of English Learners (ELs) and students with disabilities. The series is designed to empower educators, through professional learning, to implement CT Core Standards aligned curriculum, instructional practices, and assessments to meet the needs of a wide variety of learners.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GRANTS AVAILABLE TO CT TEACHERS

Fund for Teachers awards summer fellowship grants to pre-K-12 teachers to pursue self-designed professional learning. Teachers decide what they want to learn and where they want to learn it. Their odysseys take them all over the world – as scientists, researchers, artists and agents of change – and they return to their classrooms with new ideas that transform student learning and achievement. In 2016, Fund For Teachers will send 100 Connecticut teachers across the world on self-designed professional development. Applications are now available.
