ELEMENTARY ARTS BANQUET REGISTRATION LIMIT LIFTED

The 10-guest registration limit for the annual elementary arts banquet has been lifted. Schools that have already registered may add additional guests via the online registration portal up until February 8th. Any schools that have not already registered and would like to attend also have until February 8th to submit an online registration.

STILL TIME TO REGISTER FOR FEBRUARY CT CORE STANDARDS WORKSHOP

The next session in the 2015-2016 CT Core Standards Leadership Community of Practice series will be held on February 9, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the CAS Office in Cheshire. This session, entitled “Problem-Based Learning, CT Core Standards, and Technology,” will feature a panel of teachers from New Fairfield Middle School. Principals are encouraged to attend and may bring members of their teaching staff along.

DEADLINE APPROACHES FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL OF THE YEAR AWARD NOMINATIONS

The CAS Middle Level Board is accepting nominations for the 2016-2017 CAS Middle School of the Year Award. The purpose of this award is to give recognition to an outstanding CAS member middle school that represents the best in the profession. Nominations may be made by any present or former member of the school staff or by central office personnel. The deadline for submitting nominations is February 26, 2016.

STATE LAUNCHES 2016 CHET DREAM BIG! COMPETITION

The 2016 CHET Dream Big! Competition is officially underway. This statewide drawing and essay contest is designed to get Connecticut students in kindergarten through eighth grade to think about their education and careers. Now in its ninth year, the Dream Big! Competition will award a total of $26,000 in CHET contributions to 48 students who best share their dreams about life after college in an original drawing or essay. There are prizes for schools as well.

BATTLE OF THE FANS CONTEST DEADLINE IS LOOMING!

The CAS-CIAC Battle of the Fans contest is on; and, the deadline for submitting an entry is just a week away! The contest, now in its second year, is designed to encourage positive fan behavior from students and to highlight the great things schools are doing to promote sportsmanship and supportive fan conduct. Students are invited to create a 3-minute video which captures fans in action and spotlights their school’s commitment to sportsmanship and school spirit.

FIFTY-FOURTH ANNUAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS COMING IN MARCH

The 54th Annual Scholastic Chess Championships for students in grades 1-12 will be held on Saturday, March 12th, at the Travelers' cafeteria in Hartford. Students attending ANY Connecticut school (as well as home-schooled students) are invited to participate. Register now!

UPCOMING SAT WORKSHOP FOCUSES ON SOCIAL STUDIES

Due to its popularity, CAS is offering another SAT Social Studies workshop to be presented by Alan Bernstein, senior director for the College Board. Alan is returning to CAS on Wednesday, February 10, 2016, to discuss how College Board assessments can inform Social Studies curriculum and instruction.

GOVERNOR SEEKS STUDENTS TO SERVE ON STATE BOARD OF ED

The Connecticut State Board of Education is now accepting applications from Grade 11 students who are interested in serving as members of the state board of education for the 2016-2017 year. Two students, who will be appointed by the governor, will serve a one-year term, beginning July 1. Please encourage qualified students in your school to apply. The deadline for applications is February 16th.

CSDE HOSTS SECOND ANNUAL COHERENCE CONFERENCE

The Connecticut State Department of Education is sponsoring its second annual "Moving from Compliance to Coherence” conference on February 25, 2016, at the Crowne Plaza in Cromwell. The focus of this year’s event will be aligning student and educator goals and practices. Participants will be able to engage with one another in sharing successful practices for aligning educator and student goals that link effective instruction to rigorous student learning standards.
