ROXANNE AUGELLI JOINS CENTRAL OFFICE STAFF
CAS is thrilled to announce that Roxanne Augelli, recently retired principal of Washington Elementary School in Waterbury, has joined the central office staff as an assistant executive director. A 40-year veteran educator, Roxanne is well known for her achievements in the area of leadership development and for her work with Special Olympics. She has been hired to lead CAS’ elementary division following the retirement of Regina Birdsell in June.

COME CELEBRATE EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION!
The CAS Recognition of Excellence in Education Reception will be held on November 30th at the Aqua Turf in Southington. This high-profile event allows members to spotlight an exemplary program and/or outstanding staff that have brought about significant school improvement, promoted school success or had a positive impact on the school. The reception will include appetizers, cocktails, musical entertainment and an awards ceremony. Please plan to attend with your staff!

The CAS Division of Student Activities is hosting a statewide conference to showcase K-12 student activity programs that epitomize exemplary citizenship and civic awareness and demonstrate boundless potential for school-community impact. The CT Student Activity EXPO will feature both innovative and impactful programs nominated by school principals across the state as well as exhibitors who will offer schools additional learning and enrichment services.

CABE-CAPSS CONFERENCE OFFERS SESSION FOR PRINCIPALS
As part of the 2016 CABE-CAPSS convention, Nadia Lopez, author of The Bridge to Brilliance, will host a special session just for principals. Nadia, who is a finalist for the 2016 Global Teachers Prize, founded Mott Hall Bridges Academy, a middle school in Brownsville, Brooklyn, to help turn the tide in a neighborhood that had all but given up on its students. She successfully opened pathways to excellence in one of the most under-resourced communities in the country. She has been profiled in countless national media outlets, has been asked to speak at Harvard, was invited to the White House, and delivered a TED Talk on the “Revolution of Education.”

2015 NASSP PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR ADDRESSES LITERACY CHALLENGES
The CAS New Leaders Academy's October 4 session will feature Jayne Ellspermann, 2015 National Principal of the Year, discussing "Challenging the Achievement Gap: Literacy Strategies." Participants will learn how to use literacy as a foundation to create a school culture that enhances the experience of students, faculty, and staff and leads to improved achievement for all students. While the Academy is a great professional learning experience for school leaders who are early in their leadership careers, this session is one that will be of interest to administrators of any tenure. Registration is open to all CAS members and there is no cost for participation.

LEADING FOR INNOVATION: A CONFERENCE FOR HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPALS
On November 1st, CAS and the Connecticut Council for Education Reform (CCER) will present “The High School Principal: Leading for Innovation” at the Sheraton Hartford South in Rocky Hill, CT. The conference will examine topics and issues that high school principals are grappling with as they endeavor to improve teaching and learning in their schools. The keynote speaker will be Baruti Kafele, a former high school principal who successfully transformed four low-performing urban high schools in New Jersey. Dr. Douglas Reeves, renowned author and international expert on school reform, will discuss the latest research on how high impact leadership can improve schools.

C.A.L.A.S. HOSTS FORUM ON LANGUAGE, BILINGUALISM, AND LITERACY
The Connecticut Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (CALAS), in collaboration with the Literacy Coalition of Greater New Haven, is hosting a literacy forum on September 29th at Wilbur Cross High School. “Language, Bilingualism and Literacy - In School And Beyond" will feature keynote speaker Dr. Ofelia García, Professor of Urban Education and Hispanic Languages and Literatures at the CUNY Graduate Center. Admission is at no charge and light refreshments will be provided. Seating is limited so advanced registration is required.

NASSP LAUNCHES COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS
The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and Prudential Financial have launched the 22nd Annual Prudential Spirit of Community Awards for middle level and high school students who have demonstrated outstanding service to their communities. These awards allow schools to reward and shine a spotlight on students who have distinguished themselves through volunteer activities. Applications for the 2017 awards are now open to students in grades 5-12 who have volunteered in the past year.

NEW PREK-3 RESOURCE AVAILABLE ONLINE
The National P-3 Center has launched a new resource on its web site: the National P-3 Map. The Map identifies states, school districts, communities, and organizations across the United States that are working to create a well-aligned, coherent, high-quality continuum of learning from birth through third grade. Formerly curated by the Foundation for Child Development, the Map's new design and structure are intended to provide a place to find answers to the questions, "Who's doing P-3? What does their approach to P-3 include?"

AWARDS PROMOTE WOMEN'S INTEREST, ACHIEVEMENT IN TECHNOLOGY
The National Center for Women and Information Technology (NCWIT) is now accepting applications for the 2017 Aspirations in Computing Awards. NCWIT, a national body working to increase women’s participation in computing and technology, sponsors annual awards for both high school students and educators. The Award for Aspirations in Computing honors young women at the high-school level for their computing-related achievements and interests. Any US high school woman in grades 9 through 12 is eligible to apply. The Aspirations in Computing Educator Award publicly celebrates educators who encourage girls’ interest and participation in technology. Teachers, counselors, administrators, mentors and other educators are all eligible and welcome to apply.
