JAHANA HAYES DELIVERS POWERFUL MESSAGE ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF COLLABORATION
The 18th Annual CAS-CAPSS Convocation was held at the Aqua Turf on September 20th. Jahana Hayes, the 2016 National Teacher of the Year from John F. Kennedy High School in Waterbury, delivered a powerful keynote address about the importance of collaboration - among stakeholder groups and among the state's districts. “No one person or group has a monopoly on what is best for kids. We need to start sharing the work that we do. If one city or group is doing something well, we are close enough that we can share that information. After all, we do want the same things,” said Hayes. “It’s not about one district being exemplary and shining above all others. It’s about doing what’s best for kids and making sure every child in this state or in this country receives a high quality education.” Watch her deliver this compelling message with the earnestness, authenticity and passion that earned her the national title!

The Legal Mailbag column is written by Attorney Thomas Mooney of the University of Connecticut's Neag School of Education. Readers are invited to submit short, law-related questions of practical concern to school administrators. One question and its answer will be published in this column each week. Questions may be edited; authors will not be identified; and answers cannot be considered formal legal advice. Please submit questions to: legalmailbag@casciac.org
Dear Legal Mailbag: Recently, a parent called to complain about a teacher’s being “spaced-out” when she talked to him about her child. This parent is quick to draw judgments about people and even quicker to share them. I figured “better safe than sorry,” so I asked IT to give me access to his district email account so that I could check him out.
