STATE OPENS ESSA STAKEHOLDER SURVEY

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires that states develop and submit a consolidated state plan to the U.S. Department of Education. In its commitment to obtaining input from a diverse group of constituents and ensuring that Connecticut’s plan reflects the needs of all educators, students and community members, the CSDE has developed a stakeholder survey. The feedback gathered from the survey will help the CSDE develop priorities as it drafts its implementation plan. Please share your thoughts and ideas and help shape Connecticut’s transition to the new federal law.

LEGAL MAILBAG

The Legal Mailbag column is written by Attorney Thomas Mooney of the University of Connecticut's Neag School of Education. Readers are invited to submit short, law-related questions of practical concern to school administrators. One question and its answer will be published in this column each week. Questions may be edited; authors will not be identified; and answers cannot be considered formal legal advice. Please submit questions to: legalmailbag@casciac.org

Dear Legal Mailbag:
Last week, we had three teachers “take the knee” during the playing of the National Anthem at a whole-school pep rally. Fortunately, only a few of the students noticed their actions. However, some of the other staff saw them “taking the knee” and made some comments to them and to me. We are concerned that these teachers are sending the wrong message to students.
