LAST CALL FOR SPECIAL ED SUPPORT GRANTS

Does your district have a newly appointed special education administrator? If so, don’t miss this opportunity to receive special education coaching services at no cost. The CSDE and CAS have developed a coaching model to support special education administrators who are in years one through three in their positions. Limited funding is available - through a competitive grant process - that will allow districts to enjoy the benefits of a coach without incurring any expense. The deadline for submission of a grant application is next Thursday.

LEGAL MAILBAG

The Legal Mailbag column is written by Attorney Thomas Mooney of the University of Connecticut's Neag School of Education. Readers are invited to submit short, law-related questions of practical concern to school administrators. One question and its answer will be published in this column each week. Questions may be edited; authors will not be identified; and answers cannot be considered formal legal advice. Please submit questions to: legalmailbag@casciac.org

Dear Legal Mailbag:
Ever since the election, everyone seems out of sorts. Case in point, one of our teachers put up a sign in her classroom, and now a student and his father are demanding that we take it down or put theirs up! The sign is innocuous enough. It is about two feet wide and a foot tall, and it simply says “No one is an ‘Illegal’ here!” What’s not to love about that enlightened and caring sentiment?
