REPORTS SHOWS RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SMARTER BALANCED AND PSAT 8/9

A recent study by the CSDE indicated that, though there are significant differences in the design and delivery of the two assessments, there is a moderate relationship between student performance on the Smarter Balanced assessments in ELA and Mathematics in 8th grade and performance on the PSAT 8/9. Students with higher achievement on the Smarter Balanced 8th grade assessment exhibit, on average, higher scores on the PSAT 8/9. Moderate correlations are noted in both subjects between student scores on the two assessments. The correlation in ELA was slightly stronger than the one for Mathematics.

LEGAL MAILBAG

The Legal Mailbag column is written by Attorney Thomas Mooney of the University of Connecticut's Neag School of Education. Readers are invited to submit short, law-related questions of practical concern to school administrators. One question and its answer will be published in this column each week. Questions may be edited; authors will not be identified; and answers cannot be considered formal legal advice. Please submit questions to: legalmailbag@casciac.org

Dear Legal Mailbag:
A few weeks ago, I received a phone call from an outside therapist who is seeing one of my students who refuses to come to school. I did not have a release to speak to this individual but, without prompting, he revealed several pieces of information to me about the student that I felt rose to the level of filing a DCF referral due to my mandated reporter responsibilities. There was no purpose to his call to me other than to tell me this information. I did not raise an objection to him providing me the information; I just listened. I assumed DCF was already aware of it, but they were not.
