LEGAL WORKSHOP ON TRANS STUDENT RIGHTS AND SOCIAL MEDIA

Join us on January 24th for a legal workshop on gender and social media issues. Attorney Michael McKeon from Pullman and Comley LLC will offer guidance on a school district’s legal obligations to students who identify with a gender other than the one they were assigned at birth. He will cover relevant areas such as school records, the use of bathrooms and locker rooms, participation in sports and other extracurricular activities, and disagreements between students and their parents regarding gender identification. Attorney McKeon will also delve into the perennially challenging topic of social media: What control do school officials have over social media as used by staff? Do traditional concepts of freedom of speech apply? Can school officials “search” student electronic devices? Register now to learn the answers to these and other questions surrounding these two hot topics.

GRANT OPPORTUNITY FOR DISTRICT SPECIAL ED ADMINISTRATORS

CAS is pleased to remind districts of the opportunity to apply for a Special Education Coach Grant. The grant program, a joint initiative of CAS and the Connecticut State Department of Education, was established last year in response to many reports from practitioners indicating that special education administrators would benefit greatly from the support of an executive coach with special education expertise. Now in its second year, the grant opportunity is open to all districts. Recipients will receive a coach at no cost for the services provided. The deadline for submission of applications has been extended to January 25, 2018.

LEGAL MAILBAG

The Legal Mailbag column is written by Attorney Thomas Mooney of the University of Connecticut's Neag School of Education. Readers are invited to submit short, law-related questions of practical concern to school administrators. One question and its answer will be published in this column each week. Questions may be edited; authors will not be identified; and answers cannot be considered formal legal advice. Please submit questions to: legalmailbag@casciac.org

Dear Legal Mailbag:
As a middle school principal, I run a tight ship and I expect that the students in my school will be respectful in their interactions with me and all the other staff members. I was infuriated, therefore, by the conduct of a seventh grader last week. A teacher complained that the student had used vulgarity in her classroom and she sent him down to the office. I was surprised that the student was totally relaxed when I called him into my office for a little chat, but I was totally shocked when, after my first question, his response was “Buzz off, Fatso!”
