Trumbull - Quarterback Jared Katchmar completed 16 of 28 passes for 233 yards and three touchdowns, all to game MVP Jeff Jones, to lead No. 1 seed Woodland-Beacon Falls to a 35-0 win over Holy Cross-Waterbury Saturday to win the Class SS state championship at McDougall Stadium.

It was the first title for the Hawks (12-0), who are just in their third season as a varsity program. Holy Cross, the No. 3 seed, finishes at 9-3.

Jones caught 10 balls for 140 yards in less than three quarters of action. His touchdown grabs were 20, 17 and 9 yards, respectively. Halfback Pat Krakowski rushed for a game-high 171 yards on 31 carries and two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Holy Cross reached Woodland territory five times on the day, but no better than the 30-yard line. That happened on the game's opening possession. Krakowski intyercepted Holy Cross quarterback Mike Croce and returned it 63 yards to the Crusaders' 20, setting up the game's initial score.

Robert Paternostro had two interceptions for Holy Cross.

BEACON FALLS - Tailback Pat Krakowski ran for 148 yards and quarterback Jared Katchmar ran for a touchdown and threw one to lead the Woodland Regional football team to a 13-6 win over Hartford Public Tuesday night ni the Class SS semifinals.

Woodland (11-0) will play Holy Cross (9-2) - a 41-6 winner over Bacon Academy - Saturday for the championship.

Matt Trzaski caught a 4-yard TD in the fourth quarter for the decisive points for the Hawks, the Naugatuck Valley League champions who are in only there third varsity year as a program.

Luis Gomez caught a 16-yard touchdown for Hartford Public (7-4) in the third quarter. Quarterback Willie Brown threw for a 157 yards for Public.

COLCHESTER - Holy Cross took advantage of five Bacon Academy turnovers to win Tuesday night's CIAC Class SS semifinal, 41-6.

Leading 7-0 in the second quarter, Santos Lopez gave the Crusaders a 13-0 lead when he caught a fumble in mid-air and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown. On Bacon's ensuing possession, Holy Cross's Josh McFarlane recovered a fumble and returned it 69 yards to the Bacon 1-yard line, setting up Ryan Cashman's 1-yard plunge two plays later.

Backed to the wall, Bacon went for a fourth-and-one at its own 31-yard line on its next possession and failed.

Holy Cross took over at the Bacon 30-yard line and Mike Croce hooked up with Matt Smolley on the first Holy Cross play of the drive for a 27-0 halftime lead. Bacon's Jon Baker scored from a yard out for the Bobcats' only score of the game.

Chris Riggi scored from a yard out and Croce hooked up with Tim Brady on a 47-yard pass play to complete the scoring for Holy Cross.
