WEST HAVEN -- Bunnell quarterback Steve Smith did it all Saturday, throwing four touchdown passes and intercepting a key two-point conversion play with 4:01 remaining to lift Bunnell to a 28-26 victory over two-time defending Class L champion Staples in front of over 5,000 at Ken Strong Stadium.

Staples, which fell behind by two touchdowns early, used its massive line and the hard running of Alex Lebow (16 carries, 130 yards) and Colin O'Shea (96 yards, two touchdowns) to give itself a chance to escape with a victory.

Staples quarterback R.J. Marsilio threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Mike Samela to pull the Wreckers to within 28-26 with 4:09 left. But on the ensuing two-point conversion, Marsilio was rushed by sophomore Javon Campbell and Smith picked off his conversion pass in the end zone.

Staples got one more chance to win the game, starting with the ball on its own 40 with 1:49 left. But the Wreckers (11-2) just could not get a first down. Staples went 8 yards before Marsilio's fourth-and-2 pass from the Staples 47 fell incomplete with a minute remaining.

MONROE -- Steve Smith, Bunnell's senior quarterback, single-handedly carried the No. 4 seeded Bulldogs to a 29-12 comeback victory over top-seeded and league rival Masuk in front of 1,200 at Benedict Field Tuesday night. Bunnell, which will be playing in its first state final Saturday, will face No. 2 seed and defending Class L champion Staples at a site and time to be determined.

Smith threw for two scores, ran for two more and accounted for nearly every significant yard the Bulldogs gained. He finished 17 of 33 for 206 yards, consistently eluding Masuk's rush. He also ran for another 171 yards on 15 carries, running over and around baffled Masuk defenders at will.

Masuk, which actually had a 12-0 lead with five minutes left in the first half, was still up 12-7 with under two minutes remaining before Bunnell stole the momentum on a pair of game-changing plays.

First, junior Jeffrey Farrell recovered a botched Masuk snap with 1:22 left in the half. Despite being at his own 22, Smith needed only seven plays to score, connecting with senior Davon Polite on a pretty 27-yard touchdown pass as the first half expired.

FAIRFIELD -- Turnovers were the difference as Staples' defense harassed West Haven into six turnovers, including five in the second half in its 24-7 Class L semifinal victory in front of 1,500 at Fairfield Warde's Tetreau/Davis Field.

The two-time defending Class L champion Wreckers (10-1) advance to face fourth-seeded Bunnell Saturday in a place and time to be determined.

Led by Alex Lebow (22 carries, 143 yards), Staples scored on its first two possessions of the game.

R.J. Marsilio scored on a 1-yard run and then threw a 30-yard pass that Mike Samela caught diving in the back of the end zone.

After West Haven senior back James Alford cut the lead to 14-7 on a 10-yard run with 1:11 remaining in the first quarter, both defenses adjusted and scoring stalled until the fourth.

With a sack, and three tackles for a loss, Matt Santora led an inspired defensive unit that held Alford, one of SCC's top rushers, to just 71 yards on 16 carries.
