NEW HAVEN - Greenwich dominated Southington after intermission to earn a 28-7 victory in the CIAC Class LL state championship Saturday night at Southern Connecticut State University's Jess Dow Field.

The Cardinals (12-1) outscored Southington 21-0 in the second half and controlled the ball for 18 of the final 24 minutes.

In the final minute of the first half, Greenwich was knocking on the door inside the Southington 5-yard line. But the Blue Knights (11-1) stuffed three straight running plays, including one snapped on the final second, to keep the game tied.

Greenwich scored on its first three second-half possessions to put the game out of reach.

The Cardinals ground out a 10-play drive to start the second half, all on rushing plays. Jonathan Meyers carried on half of the attempts, including a 1-yard touchdown as he rode the backs of his offensive linemen into the end zone.

Southington drove right down the field to answer, but a 25-yard field goal attempt from Joe Izzo was blocked at the line. Two plays later, Greenwich's Joseph Poletsky found a streaking James Dunster behind the defense for a 67-yard touchdown.

Greenwich capped the second-half scoring with another 1-yard Meyers touchdown.

Meyers finished with 23 carries for 125 yards. Dunster finished with two catches for 127 yards and ran 12 times for 54 yards.

For the Blue Knights, Clements was 12-of-25 for 100 yards and was the team's leading rusher with 44 yards on 11 carries. Coles had eight catches for 64 yards, including a 6-yard scoring strike from Clements.Nick Florian was held to two receptions for 36 yards.

SOUTHINGTON - Paul Clements threw for 328 yards and four touchdowns as the Southington Air Raid clicked on all aerial cylinders Tuesday night in the top-seeded Blue Knights' 36-9 Class LL semifinal victory over No. 4 Shelton. Clements (16 for 22) threw deep strikes to Nick Florian (62 yards) and Gary Coles (72) in the second quarter to break up a 7-7 game and put the home team up 21-7 at the break.

The Blue Knights extended their lead to 29-7 on a 24-yard connection from Clements to Coles to open the second half, then made way for the defense, which came up with three consecutive red zone turnovers to thwart any shot at a Shelton comeback.

Southington's Israel Burgos recovered a fumble at the 3 and fellow cornerback Matt Roncaioli ended the next two Shelton possessions with interceptions inside the 10.

Shelton, led by running back Geoff Schultz (24-168), had success rushing the ball in the first half. Schultz capped an 80-yard drive with a 7-yard scoring run early in the second quarter to answer Clements' first TD pass, a 20-yarder to Brian Makles.

Shelton recorded a safety by tackling Clements in the end zone shortly after the fumble recovery at the 3. Clements countered with a 1-yard TD plunge after a 68-yard pass play to Florian.

Florian and Coles both had six receptions, Florian for 176 yards and Coles for 126.

Unbeaten Southington improved to 11-0 and returns to the Class LL final for a second straight year. Shelton (8-3) suffered its first-ever postseason defeat.

GREENWICH -- Scoring touchdowns on five of its first six possessions, Greenwich stormed to a 34-0 over Fairfield Prep victory in a Class LL semifinal at Cardinal Stadium. Greenwich (11-1) will attempt to win its first state championship in seven years when it faces Southington on Saturday.

The Jesuits (8-3) never had a chance. When the Cardinals weren't pounding the ball through the line, they were succeeding in the passing game, getting two touchdown passes from senior quarterback Joe Poletsky to wide receiver Steve Strazza.

Poletsky completed 6-of-9 passes for 119 yards -- all before halftime -- and Kavanagh led the ground attack with 117 yards on eight carries. Junior fullback Jonathan Meyers joined the hit parade with 104 yards rushing on 12 carries and junior running back Bobby Sullivan had 92 yards on nine carries.

The Cardinals did their best work early, scoring touchdowns on their first three possessions to take a 21-0 lead to halftime. Greenwich amassed 270 yards of total offense in the half, only failing to score on its last possession when Ryan Nolan intercepted a Poletsky pass deep in Fairfield Prep territory.
