NEW CANAAN -- New Canaan quarterback Curtis Casali completed 14 of 16 passes for 250 yards and five touchdowns in the first half to lead the No. 1 Rams (10-2) to a 49-14 victory over No. 4 Coventry/Windham Tech in Tuesday's Class MM semifinal.

New Canaan jumped on the Patriots with 20 first-quarter points and added 22 more in the second. New Canaan safety Dan Neeleman caught Patriots quarterback Ryan Tomlinson's first pass on the third play of the game and ran it back 25 yards to make a dominant statement 1:13 after kickoff.

Casali and his receivers handled the rest.

The third-year starter and the FCIAC's passing leader threw two touchdown passes each to Zach Renner and Alex Drexler and another to David Reed as New Canaan closed out the first half with a 42-7 lead. Coventry's score came at the start of the second quarter on a 1-yard run by quarterback Ryan Tomlinson. With leading rusher Travis Pascarelli (1,180 yards) still sidelined with pneumonia, the Patriots' offense managed little against the Rams' stout defense. "With the offense the way it is, the quarterback sees it, calls it and takes what they give him," New Canaan coach Lou Marinelli said. Drexler finished with four catches for 104 yards and Renner added three grabs for 94 yards.

Coventry's Brandon Strede and New Canaan's Austin Read each scored touchdowns in the second half.

MERIDEN - Maloney halfback Johrone Bunch rushed for 104 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 15 carries Tuesday night to lead No. 2 Maloney to a 40-14 win over No. 3 Berlin in the CIAC Class MM semifinals at Ceppa Field.

The Spartans improved to 10-1 with the victory and will meet top-seeded New Canaan, a 49-14 winner over Coventry/Windham Tech in Tuesday's other semifinal, in Saturday's finals.

Maloney quarterback Mark Padilla rushed nine times for 73 yards, including a 23-yard scoring jaunt, while fullback John Jenkins rumbled 16 yards for a touchdown.

Padilla also hit tight end Avery Flood with a 17-yard touchdown pass in a 20-point second quarter that put the Spartans up 26-0 at the break. Linebacker Duchaun Reeves got Maloney on the board with a 24-yard fumble return in the first quarter.
