NEW HAVEN - Alex Thomas and a stout defensive effort to a 34-12 victory over Bloomfield in the Class S championship game at chilly Jess Dow Field at Southern Connecticut State University.

In beating the Warhawks for the third time in five championship game matchups, the Chargers' captured a state record 15th state title in 21 championship game appearances.

Thomas lugged the ball 38 times for 257 yards, scoring three times on runs of 6, 44 and 39 yards. He bounced, bowled over and bruised his way to often tough yardage.

Indeed, most of Thomas' runs were of the 3-6 yard variety escape for several bolts. But aided by a front line led by 6-foot-3, 300 pound Eric Kuraczea, 270 pound Ryan Lawlor and 215 pound Corey Dubose and legs that never stop churning, Thomas found his openings.

BLOOMFIELD -- Andre Delaire rushed for four touchdowns and passed for a fifth as Bloomfield defeated Cromwell 45-14 in a CIAC Class S football semifinal Tuesday.

Delaire scored on a 48-yard touchdown run on Bloomfield's first possession in answer to Cromwell's 67-yard scoring drive with the opening kickoff.

Keenen Orie's 36-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Cooper on Bloomfield's second possession gave the War Hawks a 14-7 lead. On Bloomfield's next drive, Delaire scored from the 2 to make it 21-7.

Cromwell (9-2) made adjustments to stop Delaire's rushing game, but he dropped back on a halfback option and connected with Antionne Tyler for a 57-yard touchdown pass and a 28-7 second-quarter lead.

Tyshawn Prude's 1-yard rush cut the Panther's deficit to 28-14 with 12 seconds left in the half.

On the first possession of the second half, Delaire scored from 7 yards to give Bloomfield (10-1) a 35-14 lead.

Peter Pecora's 34-yard field goal made it 38-14, and Delaire ended the night the way it began, breaking loose for a 52-yard touchdown run behind Cooper's key block.
