WEST HAVEN--Senior Dan Mulrooney rushed for 353 yards on 20 carries and scored four touchdowns to lead Holy Cross to its first state championship in a 40-0 victory over Stratford in the Class SS title game at Ken Strong Stadium.
Mulrooney, who will attend Boston College next year, scored on the first play from scrimmage, a 72-yard run as the Crusaders (12-1) took a 20-0 halftime lead.
He added touchdown runs of 76, 49 yards in the third quarter and then closed out the game with a 29-yard run. He also had a 90-yard run called back because of an illegal block.
Quarterback senior Mike Croce added a pair of touchdown passes, a 30-yard strike to Jerome Mitchell with 5:23 remaining in the first quarter and then hit Anthony Chance with an 86 yard score with 10:56 left before halftime.
Croce competed 5 of 11 passes for 142 yards.
Holy Cross' defense, meanwhile, held Stratford to just 114 yards of total offense (29 in the first half) and intercepted Stratford quarterback Justin Shumyhora (8 for 18, 97 yards) four times. Kyle Lagasse had two, Andrew Fazo and Matt Fazo had the others. Stratford junior tailback Torrey Mack managed just 5 yards on 9 carries. Octavious McKoy, Stratford's MVP as a punter, rushed for 15 yards on 8 carries.

Waterbury - Senior tailback Dan Mulrooney scored three rushing touchdowns and added a fourth on a 70-yard punt return to lead the top-seeded Holy Cross High football team to a 49-8 win over No. 4 seed Tolland Tuesday night at Municipal Stadium.
Holy Cross is makiing its second trip to the Class SS finals in the past three years and thr win marked the first home playoff win for the team since 1996.
Senior quarterback Mike Croce tossed a 71-yard TD pass to Dan Awwad on the first play from scrimmage in the game to set the tone for the Crusaders (11-1).
Mulrooney followed with the punt return and added rushing scores of 34, 13 and 12 yards all in the first half.
Awwad, Kyle Lagasse and Ben Ewald all had interceptions for Holy Cross while Matt Fazo and Matt Pakulski both had fumble recoveries.
Matt Fox scored on a 4-yard TD run in the final seconds and Cody Backus had the 2-point conversions run for Tolland (7-4).

Stratford - Tory Mack ran for 120 yards and three touchdowns in the first half as Stratford built a 35-0 lead en route to a 48-6 over Griswold Tuesday night at Penders Field in the semifinals of the CIAC Class SS semifinal.
The second-seeded Red Devils (9-2) will play No. 1 Holy Cross of Waterbury in the finals Saturday. The time and site are to be determined.
It will be Stratford's first championship appearance since 1992.
Mack finished with 124 yards on 11 carries. His 75-yard run on the second play of Stratford's third possession gave the Red Devils a 21-0 lead. Fellow running back Octavious McKoy had 13 carries for 107 yards, while quarterback Justin Shumhora was 6-for-9 for 144 yards and two touchdowns. Jason Vasquez had a touchdown reception and returned an interception for a score in the second half.
Jared Delmonte scored in the fourth quarter for the No. 4 Wolverines (8-3).
