West Haven - Michael Skibicki scored on a 2-yard run in the first overtime and Brian Havlicek forced a fumble which Luke Scinto recovered to give Cheshire High School its 28-21 win over previously unbeaten Staples of Westport in Sunday's CIAC Class LL championship game at Ken Strong Stadium.

It's the seventh state title for the third-seeded Rams (11-1). It was also the fourth overtime in 180 state finals played.

Staples (12-1), the top-ranked team in both The Day Of New London coaches and New Haven Register media polls, trailed 21-7 with four minutes, 45 seconds left in regulation when it scored twice to force overtime.

Cheshire had the ball first in overtime, and Skibicki's touchdown was his only carry of the day.

Greg Palmer ran 22 times for 72 yards and two touchdowns for Cheshire. He was also 9 of 14 for 88 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown to Havlicek, and threw an interception.

Keith Gelman was 16 of 19 for 245 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Wreckers and scored on a 1-yard run with 1:44 remaining in regulation to cut his team's deficit to 21-20.

Brendan Rankowitz had eight catches for 119 yards and a touchdown for Staples and Matt Kelly ran for 43 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.

WILTON -- Staples Santiago Cuartas' state record 12th field goal of the season lifted the No. 1 Wreckers to a 30-28 win over No. 4 Xavier Tuesday night at Wilton's Fujitani Field.

Cuartas' field goal put Staples up 31-21 with 2:40 left to play. Xavier made things interesting by coming right back to score on an 18-yard reception by Jordan Hyman with 1:43 remaining, but Staples linebacker Jack Ambrose recovered a deep onside kick, and the Wreckers were able to run the clock out.

Staples' Matt Kelley finished with 225 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries. Xavier's Julian Hayes scored on touchdown runs of 10 and two yards.

GLASTONBURY - No. 3 Cheshire came up with five turnovers, including a pair of red-zone interceptions in the second half, to unseat top-seeded and defending champion Glastonbury in the Class LL semifinals Tuesday night.

The Rams (10-1) sandwiched second-quarter field goals of 32 and 26 yards from sophomore kicker Kyle Pulek around a safety to build an 8-0 lead by halftime, then extended it to 20-0 on second-half touchdown runs by running back Dan Sweeney (11 yards) and quarterback Greg Palmer (8 yards).

Glastonbury (9-2) scored in the closing minutes on a 1-yard run by Dylan Malara.

Palmer, as safety, picked off two deflected passes at the goal line while Cheshire was protecting a 14-0 lead. The Rams also got a second-half interception from Sweeney and recovered two fumbles in the opening half.

Palmer completed 9 of 14 passes for 107 yards. Sweeney rushed for 116 on 21 carries. Glastonbury quarterback Sean McQuillan was 11-for-23 for 210 yards, but was held to 32 yards rushing on 11 carries.
