M.L. Honors and Awards Committee Minutes from meeting of 2/12/2007
In attendance were Lysette Torres, Norma Posocco, Judy Abrams and Earle Bidwell
1. Teacher of the Year a. Beginning in 2007-2008 the Middle Level Teacher of the Year award will be known as the CAS Middle Level Exemplary Educator Award. The change will avoid confusion with the various TOY awards that are proliferating regionally and nationally.
b. Cronin and Co. has invited CAS to help select exemplary teachers to receive Ronald McDonald House Charities awards. Earle Bidwell will propose that the three divisions of CAS forward the names and paperwork for the recipient and runner-up for the CAS Exemplary Educator Awards to Cronin.
c. The majority of the meeting time was spent in working on the Teacher of the Year Scoring Guide; a work in progress to help determine finalists for the award. Rochelle Schwartz put the work from last months meeting into a draft rubric. There was considerable discussion about the relative weight of the three categories. While the committee did not reach consensus, there was agreement to make an effort to have the number of items in each category relatively close. By combining some items and creating a better alignment with the three categories, that goal was achieved. The rubric ended up with 12 items under Excellence in Teaching, 10 items under Involvement and 13 items under Leadership in the Profession.
2. School of the Year
a. Additional readers will be needed for the initial screening for school of the year. Rochelle Schwartz and Norma Posocco will need to excuse themselves because of possible conflicts of interest. Some members of the middle level board will be asked to be readers. If Mansfield M.S. is a finalist, Judy Abrams will replace Norma on the visiting committee and if Chippen Hills is a finalist, Lysette Torres will replace Rochelle.
b. At the request of a member school district, the committee was asked to consider a District Award for a town that has two middle schools. The committee felt that it was too late to consider any change for the current school year. The Full committee will deliberate the issue at the March meeting in preparation for next year.
The next committee meeting is scheduled for March 12, 2007.
