Minutes
In attendance were: Jeffrey Cryan, Richard Dellinger, Troy Monroe, David Russell, Joe Scheideler, Carla Kennedy, Norma Posocco, Earle Bidwell and Guests Anna Cutuiai-Leonard and Pat Llodra

1. Middle Level Board Appointment: Due to the retirement of Ann Cox, the middle level board in entitled to appoint an assistant principal to fill her term. Two Earle Bidwell was charged with inviting Anthony Carrano form Lyme-Old Lyme middle School to serve on the board. (Note. Anthony accepted the nomination)

2. As part of a Wallace Grant Anna Cutuiai-Leonard and Pat Llodra have been working to develop Leadership Frameworks for Professional Development for Administrators. Their work is driven by four strands: Vision, Moral & Ethical Behavior, Systems Thinking, and Human Relations. They shared two with the boards and asked for feedback. They also invited school leaders to read, reflect and give more detailed feedback via email.

3. CAS Board of Directors Goal to Increase Membership in CAS
Board members reviewed a list of non-member middle schools and divided up the list. The goal is to make a personal contact with the appropriate principal or central office person and encourage membership in the next school year.

4. Middle Level Membership in CAAD; In response to a request from Fred Balsamo on behalf of the CAAD, the board considered a request for including CAAD dues as part of the middle level dues. By unanimous vote, the board decided to support CAAD by including CAAD with other affiliates CASC and CANHS on a separate invoice that is included with the middle level dues invoice. Schools wishing to join any of these three organizations may do so by adding the appropriate amount to their CAS dues. Middle level athletic director/coordinator and an email address will also be added to the middle level database on the website
5. Education Legislation: Earle Bidwell highlighted the education legislation section of the CAS website and encouraged members to track educational legislation and to weigh in with emails to appropriate legislators at all levels of government. Two bills that will be heard early next week are:
a. Alternative Route to the Principalship HB 7353
b. Grant for special education provided to gifted and talented students HB 7358
Earle agreed to send email copies of letters he wrote in opposition to the first bill to be used as talking (writing) points by committee members.
6. As a result of a meeting Earle Bidwell and Jody Goeler held with Associate Commissioner Rabinowicz a new initiative on Middle School Frameworks will be undertaken. The initial steering committee will be Dr. Rabinowicz and Bureau Chief Barbara Westwater, Earle and Jody and two practitioners of their choosing.
7. Earle Bidwell reported that some austerity measures will be in place for the Scholar –Leader Banquet due to the loss of a major sponsor. Flowers, one meal course and music will be the casualties unless a sponsor is secured before the banquet. He will also pursue the board’s wish to begin the banquet at 5:30 rather than 6:00 p.m.
8. Troy Monroe from the NELMS and CAS Boards and Norma Posocco from the Center for Early Adolescent Board will be planning the state reception in Providence at the NELMS convention.
