M.L. Leadership Committee Minutes from meeting of 10/2/2007
1. Chairperson Joe Scheideler welcomed returning committee members Linda Anania, Fred Baruzzi, Marco Famiglietti, and Earle Bidwell, and newcomers Donna Schilke and Robert Slie. 2. Review of 2007 Conference: The evaluations from the 2007 conference revealed that 214 of 228 respondents rated the conference as a 4 or 5. Furthermore when asked to describe the conference in a word, 226 of the 228 responded favorably. A look at four pages of comments revealed that students were most favorably impressed with presentations that were active rather than passive and that time with their own classmates would be desirable. 3. The Arthur Director Award 2007 was presented to Granby Memorial Middle School at a school assembly attended by Earle Bidwell, Janice Grecco, Arthur Director and David Director. An article will be In the October CAS Bulletin and another one in Hartford Magazine. 4. It was decided that the Theme and Direction for the Conference were still appropriate but there would be some changes to the schedule that would result in a next steps planning session at the end of the day for the schools attending. Earle will develop a new time schedule before the next meeting. 5. Committee members agreed to call all of last years adult presenters, in advance of Janice Greccos letter, to thank them for their past participation and our hope that they would present again this year. They will also solicit new adult presenters. Earle Bidwell will provide a Guide for Soliciting Presenters (attached to the minutes). It is important to obtain more adult presenters as it is difficult to get large numbers of high school students to present due to the fact that the conference falls during exam week at many high schools. 6. It was decided that the Advisor Session based on topics submitted at the time of registration was popular and should be continued. Fred Baruzzi agreed to be the facilitator. Several ideas were put forward for the second session including a presentation slanted toward using the internet to survey students and blogs to promote leadership. Committee members are going to explore and refine proposals and bring them to the next meeting. Some of the advisory time will also be devoted to preparing them to lead next steps sessions at the end of the afternoon. An outline for this activity will be developed at a later meeting. 7. Assistant Executive Director Earle Bidwell acknowledged the celebration of Mansfield Middle School as CAS School of the Year. He also informed the committee of some upcoming opportunities for professional development and school improvement including the CAS Fall Conference on October 23, 2007 (registration closed as of this writing), An Administrator Academy on November 14 & 14, and Breaking Ranks in the Middle training on October 29-30. 8. The next meeting will be on November 6, 2007 at 4:00 p.m. (Dont forget to vote)
