Minutes from meeting of 11/6/2007

Connecticut Association of Schools
Middle Level Student Leadership Conference Committee
Minutes November 6, 2007

In attendance were: Fred Baruzzi, Marci Famiglietti, Thomas Heffernan, Joe Scheideler, Donna Schilke and Earle Bidwell

1. Presenters: The committee reviewed the list of breakout presenters provided by Janice and agreed to attempt to secure more.
2. Advisor Session(s) It was confirmed that the first breakout session would be an “open space” style session in CAFÉ Q facilitated by Fred Baruzzi. Attendees will be invited to submit topics for discussion at the time of registration. The second session will be a presentation by Smith School teacher Rob Rose on “Using Blogs to Augment Student Leadership.” This session will be held in the Echlin Amphitheater.
3. The committee reviewed and accepted the new time schedule that would provide a “next steps” session at the end for school groups to begin planning how to incorporate the themes of the conference into their school.
4. Considerable time was devoted to brainstorming how the committee might have access to and share the information derived from the final session. It was suggested that we bring a small copier or use NCR paper; and ask schools to share their plans before leaving.
5. A draft of a “next steps” planning sheet was developed. Questions would include:
a. What did we learn about building a climate of acceptance and respect?
b. What initiatives are already in place to ensure a climate of acceptance and respect at our school?
c. What leadership skills did we learn?
d. What can we implement at our school?
e. Who (back at school) needs to be included in next steps?
f. What might be different about our school next year as a result of the conference?
6. It was decided that lunch tickets would be distributed by committee members in the lunch line rather than in the morning.
7. Earle and Janice will develop a schedule for committee members for the day of the conference.
8. It was decided that, barring last minute needs (lack of presenters etc.), there would be no need for a December committee meeting.
9. Addendum: Janice and Earle visited Quinnipiac on November 29th to meet the new assistant director for facilities and view changes to the campus. In the event of snow, Echlin will not be available so we will be developing an alternate room schedule for a possible snow date.
