Minutes
October 16, 2008

In attendance were: Richard Dellinger, Bernadette Hamad, Ida Hickerson, Susan Muirhead, James O’Connor, Norma Posocco, Walter Willett and Earle Bidwell.
Resigning from the committee due to job changes were: Tom Scarice, Marjorie Jackson and Jeff Fournier.

1. Exemplary Practices Action Item
a. Upon the recommendation of Norma Posocco, Chairperson of the School of the Year Committee, the MLPS committee voted to grant exemplary status certification to Middle School of the Year, Canton Middle School for Teaming and Climate.
b. Similarly, they voted to grant exemplary status to runner-up Two Rivers Magnet M.S. for Climate.
2. Exemplary Practices (Re-certification for schools beyond 3 years) update. The following schools have not been visited for recertification.
a. Mystic Middle School (Teaming) Fred Baruzzi will head the visiting team
b. Albert D. Griswold (Teaming) Donna Schilke will head the visiting team
c. East Hartford Middle School (Teaming) Earle Bidwell will contact the new principal to determine if they would like a visit.
3. Assistant Executive Director’s Report: Secondary School Reform and implications for Professional Studies Committee
Earle Bidwell reported on the considerable involvement of the middle level in the proposal for secondary school reform. It was decided that the work of the committee for the remainder of this year, and perhaps beyond, would be to study different aspects of the proposal and to research and recommend practices to support them.
4. Exemplary Practices: Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. As this work is progressing slowly, it was decided that Earle Bidwell will endeavor to create the drafts of the remaining recommendations (25, 27, 28) and present them to the committed for review in order to expedite the work.
5. IMPACT: Editor, Norma Posocco reported on new directions for the journal. Beginning with the next issue, it will be an online publication resulting in:
• Cost saving
• Increased exposure
• More frequent issues
• Increased opportunities for pictures, graphics and professional layout.
Janice Grecco will assume responsibility for layout.
Norma also solicited articles from those in attendance and asked them to gather best practice articles from their colleagues and faculty to enhance the publication.
