Connecticut Association of Schools Middle Level Boards Minutes October 1, 2009
In attendance were: Chairman Joe Scheideler, Sally Biggs, Paul Cavaliere, Jeffrey Cryan, Richard Dellinger, James OConnor, Judy Abrams and Earle Bidwell
1. Possibilities an inspirational and thought-provoking Podcast was viewed. It promoted unconventional thinking about resources, responsibilities and opportunities. Board Responsibilities, Joe Scheideler indicated that a goal of the CAS Board of Directors was to examine expectations and responsibilities of board members for the CAS and other boards. He shared sample expectations from New England League of Middle Schools, New Hampshire Middle Level Association as well as some thoughts gleaned fro Jim Collins book Seven Measures of success. A subcommittee volunteered to examine the documents and create a draft for the middle level boards. The sub-committee will be Paul Cavaliere, Chair, Rich Dellinger, Joe Scheideler and Sally Biggs. 3. Middle Level Survey, Earle Bidwell presented the results of the middle membership survey conducted in the spring. The top ten items focused on advocacy with various groups, legislative initiatives and middle el level athletic guidelines. The results will be published in the November Bulletin and will be available online. 4. Secondary School Reform: The initiative for cohort conversations to be led by Sue Lemke and Kelly Lyman has been put on hold pending the outcome of a CT initiative to secure federal Race to the Top funds. CAS is one of the partners with the CSDE to write a proposal. 5. Guidelines for Middle Level Athletics: As indicated earlier, Guidelines for Middle Level Athletics is a top ten item of importance for the membership. An initiative is now underway to review and revise the guidelines. Committee member are Fred Baruzzi, Sally Biggs, Kevin Brough, Jim OConnor and two athletic directors. The starting point will be suggested revisions prepared by CAAD. 6. Assistant Executive Directors Report, Earle Bidwell a. Board Vacancies: There are two vacancies on the Board of Control as a result of members transferring to other divisions. Earle is authorized to appoint replacements; at least one of whom will be an assistant principal. b. The Scholar-Leader Speaker will be Joan Jarrett, president elect of the National Middle School Association. 7. The next meeting is scheduled for December 3, 2009
