In attendance were: Vaughn Ramseur, Richard Huelsmann, Carole Alvaro, John Lineen, Sam Lewbel, Ellen Stankevich, Tom Dzicek, Marge Doolittle and Earle Bidwell
1.0 Report on NMSA Convention: Earle Bidwell reported that there were almost 9,000 attendees at the NMSA Convention in Portland, Oregon. He and Preston Shaw represented CAS at the state leader meetings. The full text for this report can be found in the soon to be released December CAS “Bulletin.”
2.0 Report on Middle Level Certification: The committee to which Earle Bidwell and Dick Huelsmann were appointed has yet to meet. It was suggested and the Boards concurred that we should pursue other avenues to bring the certification message to state department officials. Earle Bidwell shared a PowerPoint presentation of the CAS proposal.

3.0 Proposed Goals for 2002-2003: After a discussion of the6 goals areas under consideration, the Boards adopted three as the most timely and important. Furthermore, some board members in attendance agreed to participate on sub-committees to advance the goals (Absent members are urged to contact Dick Huelsmann or Earle Bidwell if they are willing to participate on the sub-committees. The goals and volunteers are listed here.

3.1 Certification for Middle Level Teachers and Administrators: Earle Bidwell & Dick Huelsmann
3.2 “No Child Left Behind” Legislation: Sam Lewbel, Vaughn Ramseur, Carole Alvaro
3.3 Advocacy for Middle Level Education: John Lineen, Marge Doolittle


4.0 Committee Reports

4.1 Fine Arts: Vaughn Ramseur reported that plans are well under way for the second annual “Arts in the Middle” conference at the Hartford Art School in May. He and Earle will be visiting the school in the near future to further develop the plans and explore funding sources.

4.2 Professional Studies: John Lineen reported on progress being made to create a CAS certification for Connecticut middle schools with exemplary teams. It is hoped that the application will be available in February and teams certified by May.

4.3 Program: Successful celebrations were held in Mansfield, East Hartford and Mystic to celebrate the teacher of the year and co-schools of the year.
