M.L. Program Committee Minutes from meeting of 2/11/2003
Connecticut Association of Schools Middle Level Program Committee Minutes February 11, 2003
In attendance were: Michael Rafferty, Carol Janssen, Henry Coe and Earle Bidwell
1.0 Fall Conference update The high school committee is interested in doing a joint conference. Mike Rafferty and Marie Castle-Good will t work with a similar number of high school people along with Mike Buckley and Earle Bidwell. 2.0 Assistant Executive Directors Report Mr. Bidwell reported on new directions for the middle level services at CAS related to CAS Middle Level Board goals, NMSA focus and legislation. The new directions will impact his time and require some additional assistance from committee and board members. 3.0 School of the Year 3.1 Visitation Scoring Sheet (work in progress) Feedback was forthcoming from one or two committee people and has been incorporated in the accompanying draft. During the meeting, remaining items were dealt with and the document was finalized. 3.2 Procedure for gathering information (before & during visit) It was determined that the score sheet (above) will be used as a self-assessment instrument for finalists, will guide requests for documentation and the school visit. It was also determined that the committee would split up for some of the visit in order to maximize the time. 4.0 Teacher of the Year Essay It was determined that the finalists for Teacher of the Year would be asked to write a one or two page statement of beliefs about teaching and education. It was felt that this would help candidates to focus on the essence of what they do and to provide the committee with additional insights. 5.0 Other Business CAS will have a booth at NELMS this year and volunteers were solicited to work at the booth. Marie Castle-Good volunteered for a two hour stint on Tuesday fro 1-3; Michael Rafferty and Carole Janssen will check calendars and get back to us
