1.0 Committee Reports

Program: Rochelle Schwartz and Earle Bidwell reported that finalist for teacher and school of the year awards will be chosen in the first couple of weeks in May. Representatives of the committee will also be meeting with their counterparts on the high school committee to discuss the agreed upon joint middle-high school fall conference.

Leadership: Tom Heffernan reported on a successful Leadership conference attended by over 600 participants. For the first time, the conference was co-sponsored by the Connecticut Association of Student Councils who provided the student presenters. There were 27 teams of presenters in all. Smith Middle School, Avon Middle School and Canton Jr. Sr. High School all had a prominent role in presenting the conference. The keynoter was Matt Cavedon, a middle school student from McGee Middle School in Berlin.

Fine Arts: Earle Bidwell reported that “Arts in the Middle” will take place on Tuesday May 20, 2003 at the University of Hartford. Some changes were made to accommodate more students at this year’s conference.

Early Adolescent Educators: Norma Posocco reported that the joint boards sponsored a booth at the NELMS Convention for the first time in over ten years. Dick Huelsmann, Jody Goeler, Carol Alvaro, Earle Bidwell and she were among the CAS representatives at the booth over the three days. Some valuable networking took place, we feel that CAS and IMPACT got a great deal of exposure and attendance was dramatically improved at the Connecticut Reception.

We are co-sponsoring with NELMS an Emergency Middle Level Training Workshop August 20th and 21st. This training targets teachers who are new to the middle level or those transferred from the elementary or high school level. Taught by NELMS Consultant Cathy Thibodeau, Emergency Middle Level Training provides participants with understandings and insights into young adolescents, the skills necessary to become effective team members and effective classroom techniques and strategies.

Earle Bidwell is a nominee for a position on the Board of Trustees of the National Middle School Association. If successful, he will represent the Eastern Region that includes the Maritime Provinces of Canada, states from Maine to West Virginia as well as Europe and Africa

Professional Studies: Earle Bidwell reported that the “Exemplary Teaming” certification process is well underway. The committee will be undergoing training in preparation for visiting schools that make the cut on the paper screening.

2.0 CAS Board of Director’s Goals & Objectives: Richard Huelsmann led the committee through a page-by-page review of the CAS Board of Director’s goals. Eight were selected as having significance to the middle level and the middle level boards endorsed and outlined an action plan for each.
