.0 Greetings and Introductions: Board Chair, Preston Shaw welcomed new members Carol Janssen, Principal of McGee Middle School in Berlin and Janice Tirinzonie, Principal of Timothy Edwards M.S. in South Windsor to the Board.

.0 Assistant Principal of the Year Nomination: After reviewing a list of member assistant principals, Mr. Shaw accepted nominations to put forward to the nominating committee. Joe Scheideler from Canton Jr-Sr High School was the choice of the Boards. In addition, they asked John Lineen to ascertain the willingness of the Lincoln Middle School A.P. to have his name put forward for a second year. The Board also asked Rochelle Schwartz to express the concern of the Board in not considering a candidate last year who appeared to be well qualified.

.0 Status Report on Committees: Earle Bidwell reported that committees had not met yet. He reported on the tasks ahead and the challenges facing each committee in the coming months.

.0 Many principals have received a letter from a group calling itself the Advocacy Group for Parents of Children Affected By Bullying (AGPCAF) seeking copies of your “2002-2003 list of verified acts of bullying from your school.” Members of your CAS middle level boards have reviewed this letter, the AGPCAF web site and the law regarding reporting bullying incidents. They have serious reservations regarding this group’s motivation for requesting the information, their legal status to request the information and schools’ potential liability for making this information available to them. The middle level boards recommend that member principals NOT send this information to the AGPCF without first obtaining legal advice from school attorneys. It is also recommended that this information be shared with superintendents of schools.

.0 Individual Affiliate Plan for NMSA: Mr. Shaw tabled this item until the next meeting

.0 Review of Middle Level Goals and Committee Chairs: Mr. Shaw reviewed the task of each sub-committee and the names of the chairs. Committee members are (chairs in bold print): Certification for Middle Level Teachers and Administrators; Dick Huelsmann, Preston Shaw, Tom Heffernan “No Child Left Behind” Legislation: Carol Alvaro, Rochelle Schwartz, Jan Tirinzonie; Advocacy for Middle Level Education: Norma Posocco, John Lineen. Absent members will be asked to sign up for committees. Committee chairs should call Earle Bidwell to discuss plans of action.

.0 Month of the Young Adolescent: Norma-Jean Posocco reported that the CEAE would be hosting a media event to announce the celebration of MOYA. Invitations were sent to all member schools and the numbers are not as strong as we would like them to be. Board members were asked to help boost attendance.

.0 Summer State Leaders Meeting: Mr. Shaw tabled this item to a later date.

.0 Assistant Executive Director’s Report: Mr. Bidwell reported on the fall celebrations for Teacher, School and Principal of the Year. He also encouraged schools to apply for NMSA “Teams That Make a Difference.” Finally, he reported that the NMSA Trustee election winner was Joan Spicher from Pennsylvania.

.0 The next meeting of the Board(s) is scheduled for November 25, 2003
