Connecticut Association of Schools
Middle Level Leadership Conference Committee
Minutes
October 7, 2003

In attendance were: Carol Alvaro, Fred Baruzzi, Jody Goeler, Mary Hourdequin, Joe Scheideler and Earle Bidwell.

1. Welcome and Introduction of New Member Mary Hourdequin, Principal of King Philip Middle School in West Hartford

2. Review of 2003 Conference

a. The feedback on last year’s conference was very positive. The changes we made were well received and the keynoter was exceptional.

b. Arthur Director Award: Avon Middle School is the award winner. Pending approval from our corporate partner, the date for the celebration will be November 14, 2003 in the morning.

3. Plans for 2004. This year’s conference will be on Tuesday, March 9, 2004. The theme will remain “Making Acceptance Acceptable.” It is a memorable slogan and one that is gaining name recognition. It is also broad enough to allow for adjustments in strands and presenters.
a. Keynote Speaker: After a brainstorming session where ideas about former attendees and others were offered up as keynoters, the committee decided to consider two teachers as first and second choice. Mr. Bidwell will make the contacts and the name of the keynoter will be made public after acceptance.
b. Connecticut Association of Student Councils participation was very well received last year and CASC will be asked to participate again this year.
c. The Esteem Group from Canton Jr./Sr. High School will be asked to participate again this year. They did a terrific job last year.
4. Assistant Executive Director’s Report: Mr. Bidwell thanked the committee for support in the East Region election of NMSA and reported on the CAS support of October as “Month of the Young Adolescent.”

5. Future Agenda Items will include a review of the breakout strands, confirmation of a keynoter and large group presenters, and invitation letters to breakout presenters.

The next meeting will be the annual dinner meeting of the committee. Please note the date change. It will be at a Hartford area restaurant (to be determined) on November 3, 2003
