1. Focus Topic: One great idea to share that a colleague might replicate to his or her benefit!
The APs who gathered on September 22nd talked almost exclusively about climate enhancing activities underway in their schools. These included both formal and informal initiatives as follows: South Windsor HS 9th grade academy, 5 learning communities Masuk (Monroe) HS faculty study groups, curriculum mapping Broad Brook ES (E. Windsor) 2nd step program, Dont Laugh At Me (DLAM) Tolland HS alternative program East Haven HS 9th grade teams, whole-school advisory Branford HS whole-school advisory, performance learning standards, students and parents on every committee Wamogo (Litchfield) HS mentor/mentee, refined ISS Pulaski (Meriden) ES 2nd step program, word-of-the-day Glastonbury HS mixed-grade homeroom groups, private wisdom program Avery (Somers) MS activity program, anti-bullying initiative Cheshire HS Revised ISS, community outreach for alternatives to suspension Ellis Tech excel discipline data management system Bacon Academy (Colchester) revised ISS Martin Luther King (Hartford) ES social skills program (1 per month) Suffield MS DLAM program, project discovery Tyl MS (Montville) mural project, innovative reward system for teachers subbing during planning periods RHAM MS (Hebron) pillars of character Ellington HS student life facility, focus on student/staff relations Bristol Central HS detracking with support, teacher-friendly test data system Maloney (Meriden) HS mediation log Poquonock ES (Windsor) Quiet zones, personal bests Booth Free ES (Roxbury) pillars of character, behavior reports
2. Committee/Board Reports: Given the length of the discussion pertaining to the focus topic, no committee/board reports were given.
3. Report of Conference Planning Committee: The planning committee will next meet on Wednesday, October 15, 2003, at the Baci Grill in Cromwell (5:30 p.m.).
4. Upcoming Meetings and Focus Topics:
November 17 Legal Issues with Attorney Susan Freedman of Shipman and Goodwin LLP she will address a variety of legal issues including IDEA, 504, discipline, and NCLB. Like all of our committee meetings, this session will be interactive so bring your questions.
January 12 Welcome to the Trenches a panel of first-year assistant principals will talk about lessons learned so far and the highs and lows associated with this first administrative position. This is an excellent forum for other beginning APs as well as teachers thinking about such a career move.
