Middle Level Board of Control Minutes from meeting of 11/25/2003
CEAE-CAMSP Minutes November 25, 2003
In attendance were Carole Alvaro, Thomas Heffernan, Richard Huelsmann, Carol Janssen, Preston Shaw, John Lineen, Tom Dzicek, Monita Leavitt and Earle Bidwell
1. Principal of the Year Nomination(s) Tom Heffernan, Principal of East Granby Middle School is the choice of the CAMPS Board for Principal of the Year. His name will be forwarded to the CAS recognition committee with a unanimous endorsement. 2. Committee Reports a. The Fine Arts Committee has developed a portfolio to be used with potential sponsors. Committee members will be contacting art supply houses, banks, museums, theatres and Milton Bradley Company as possible partners. b. Plans are well under way for the Winter Conference. All of the presenters are in place and we have secured the services of Alan November as a keynoter and Susan Frost as the luncheon speaker. Breakout sessions will feature present and past schools and teachers of the year c. The Arthur Director Leadership Award was recently presented to Judy Marks and the Peer Support Group at Avon Middle School. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Director and CT Lighting Centers President, David Director attended the event. The keynote speaker for this years event is Judith Patnode who has developed a curriculum for celebrating a national holiday in the Bahamas. d. The Professional Studies Committee has recognized five schools for exemplary status in teaming. They are: East Hartford Middle School, Timothy Edwards Middle School, Albert D. Griswold Middle School, Mansfield Middle School and Mystic Middle School. e. Mr. Shaw led a discussion of an Individual Affiliate Plan for NMSA. In Connecticuts plan, there should be validation of the tremendous advocacy work being carried out by Executive Director Swaim and others. Also we wish to commend NMSA and continue to encourage their work in key research and interventions. We also want to encourage NMSA to establish an office in Washington. We feel it is a disadvantage not to be in the same location as the other two associations and near the lawmakers. Mr. Shaw and Mr. Bidwell will draft a plan. 3. Review of Middle Level Goals Progress Reports a. Certification: Mr. Huelsmann will be sharing the CAS middle level proposal for adjustments to the certification regulations with the State Board of Education. Plans are also in the works for Messrs. Shaw, Huelsmann and Bidwell to visit Nancy Puglisi, Bureau Chief for Certification. b. The No Child Left Behind Sub-committee will be reactivated to consider a document circulated by Mr. Savage requesting that CAS develop some resources for public comment by schools not making adequate yearly progress. c. In the area of Advocacy, all center members; education committee legislators and superintendents will receive copies of a new CAS CD-ROM outlining CAS services and initiatives. In another initiative, Mr. Bidwell has been asked to give presentations on advocacy to the NMSA and NASSP Conventions. 4. Mr. Shaw and Ms. Janssen reported on their experiences at the NMSA Convention in Atlanta. They encouraged schools to apply for NMSA teaming awards.
The next meeting will be held on January 27, 2004 at 4:00 at the CAS office.
