Connecticut Association of Schools Middle Level Program Committee Minutes September 9, 2002 In attendance were: Michael Rafferty, Carole Janssen, Marie CastleGood, Rochelle Schwartz (newly appointed as Principal of Northeast Middle School in Bristol) and Earle Bidwell
0.0 Fall Conference 0.1 Update on Progress to Date (Earle Bidwell) 0.1.1 Theme: Teaming for Success. 0.1.2 Location: Southbury Hilton 0.1.3 Keynote Speaker: Dr. Joe Hoff 0.1.4 Brochure: Expected mailing date Sept. 12 0.1.5 Website: new and improved website will also contain on-line registration 0.1.6 John Wallace Award Winners: Katherine Early and Trevor Charles will be invited to guests of CAS for the conference
0.2 Breakout sessions each presenter will be asked to do 1 topic and repeat the session for a total of 12 breakouts over three breakout sessions 0.2.1 Joe Hoffs session will be a continuation of the keynote address 0.2.2 Judith Patnode, Teacher of the Year runner-up, will be asked to do Junkanoo a cultural and music inspired whole school interdisciplinary unit. 0.2.3 East Hartford Middle School will be asked to present on discipline or what they want to feature 0.2.4 Mystic Middle School will be asked to present on looping, curriculum of another featured topic of their choice. 0.2.5 Tom Mooney has agreed to present a legal update for teachers and administrators 0.2.6 Dan Coughlin, CAS Teacher of the Year will be asked to present on an appropriate topic of his choice.
0.3 Time Schedule and exhibitors: We need to create a time schedule that gives exhibitors more time for interaction with conference attendees. The following time schedule was adopted.

0.4 Publicity: CAS now has the capability to e-mail information to all member schools. The CAS staff will do at least one mass e-mailing regarding the conference.
0.5 Expenses and Conferences Registration Charge: Last years conference ended with a deficit of over $5,000. Add to this a loss of revenue due to a loss of ITL funding from the state, and it is imperative that we consider raising our prices to meet budget. After a discussion that included an informal survey of costs for comparable workshops and conferences in CT, it was decided to charge: $95.00 for CAS members (including the Center for Early Adolescent Educators); $125.00 for non-members; $75.00 each for three or more members from the same school and $25.00 for those attending the awards luncheon only.

1.0 Assistant Executive Directors Report: Earle Bidwell reported that Jack Berkemeyer, Assistant Executive Director of the National Middle School Association has agreed to be next years keynoter, as well as the keynoter at this years Scholar-Leader Banquet. He also reported on the summer summit in Las Vegas where he and Bob Spear were presenters. Earle will also be presenting on How To Be An Advocate For Middle Level Education In As Little As Two Hours A Month.. He also shared an op-ed piece published in the Journal Inquirer on the eve of the opening of school entitled Middle School Reform Making a Difference. 2.0 T accommodate changing schedules and meet the needs of the committee, the fall meeting schedule was altered. The next meeting will be Monday October 7 at 4:00 in Avon. (This meeting will be at the location of the Hartford Area Principals Dinner (Avon). Mike Rafferty and Henry Coe will be invited to attend the dinner as guests of CAS. All other committee members are members of the Hartford Area Group. The November meeting is cancelled and the December meeting will be held on Monday the 9th.
Addendum to minutes After phone conversations on September 10, 2002, the keynote address will be entitled Effective Schools Becoming Even Better. Mystic Middle School will present on Looping and Multiage Grouping. Presenters will be Kathleen Derry and Natalee Denard.
