M.L. Program Committee Minutes from meeting of 9/20/2004
Connecticut Association of Schools Middle Level Program Committee Minutes September 20, 2004
In attendance were: Carol Janssen, Jeffrey Schumann, Scott Nichol and Earle Bidwell
1.0 Greetings and Committee Mission: Carol Janssen welcomed members to the first meeting of the new program committee. The committee mission is to coordinate the annual conference and to promote other professional development opportunities for middle level administrators and teachers.
2.0 Winter Conference The winter conference is scheduled for Friday, January 28, 2005 at the Radisson Conference Center in Cromwell. We looked into reserving for more than one day in order to have a snow date but it would have cost several thousand for the extra day. In the event of a major snow, we will have a 60 or 90 minute delayed opening. The theme is continuing to close the achievement gap. The keynote speaker will Katie Haycock, Director of the Education Trust in Washington, D.C. A save the date flyer has been prepared and will be mailed out to all middle and high schools this week.
The majority of the meeting time was devoted to brainstorming possible breakout sessions and presenters (summary with contact person to follow)
We probably will want to secure between six and eight presenters with the high school doing the same. As progress is made, it will be reported to the CAS office and committee members will be informed by e-mail Luncheon Speaker: TBD
Forum(s) If there is a hot topic for a middle level forum, it will be added to the program later. Otherwise, the time will be used for exhibitors and informal networking
Schedule : Assuming there a luncheon speaker, the schedule from last year will be used for the day
Assistant Executive Directors Report: Earle reported on upcoming in-service opportunities for middle level teachers in October and November.
