Minutes
October 5, 2004
In attendance were: Jody Goeler, Tom Heffernan, Troy Monroe, Joe Scheideler and Earle Bidwell
1. Arthur Director Award: The award winning school is East Hartford Middle School. The award presentation will take place at the school on October 15, 2004 and will be attended by CAS staff and Arthur and David Director.
2. Date for Conference Monday, March 14, 2005. The departure from the traditional Tuesday date was at the request of the University. The committee sees no additional issues or difficulties with a Monday Date.
3. Opening Session
a. Revisit Purpose: The primary purposes for an opening session were described as (a) motivation for the students (b) an opportunity for students to meet others (c) provide a buffer for late arriving schools
b. Possible Changes: Given the above, it was determined that a change from the traditional formal setting and keynote speaker would be appropriate. After a good deal of discussion it was decided that the room should be set up in 20 pods corresponding to students’ assigned groups. Each group will be facilitated by a high school leader and there will be a series of icebreakers and “get to know you” activities. The discussion turned to possible presenters who would be motivational in this environment. A list was developed.
4. Breakout Sessions: At the next meeting, we will develop a “Call for Presenters” and further outline specifics for breakout session content. Earle and Janice will create a letter to send to past presenters asking if they would like to continue. It was decided that the large group sessions were valuable and we would like the Canton High School and Avon Middle School groups to join us again.
