In attendance were: Tom Dzicek, Norma Posocco, Peggy Schaedler, Carol Alvaro, John Lineen, Rochelle Schwartz, James Slattery, Preston Shaw and Janice Tirinzonie.

Introductions and Greetings: Preston Shaw greeted new members Schaedler and Slattery to the board(s) and shared the mission and goals of the middle level division.

Prudential Award: Members were encouraged to apply for the Prudential Award for service. The national award is for high and middle school students who distinguish themselves in public service.

CAS-NASSP Principal of the Year: Carol Janssen, principal of McGee Middle School and CAS’s middle level Principal of the Year was selected as one of three finalists for NASSP National Principal of the Year.

Summer New England Leaders Meeting: Norma Posocco reported on the summer New England middle level leaders meeting hosted by Connecticut in Manchester. Highlights of the meeting included:
• the creation of a proclamation for the Month of the Young Adolescent that could be signed by all 6 state leaders and NELMS.
• An agreement to support NMSA’s Middle School News Service. This service will be coordinated by NELMS.
• Endorsement of the position statement entitled “Highly Qualified: A Balanced Approach”, put forth by the NAESP, the NMSA, and the NASSP.

Scholar- Leader Keynote Speaker: The committee developed a prioritized list of potential keynote speakers. The list will be forwarded to the CAS office and Earle Bidwell will be asked to contact the first choice.

Assistant Principal of the Year: The board voted to advance the name of a candidate for assistant principal of the year. The name of that person is being withheld until the candidate’s willingness to pursue the honor is determined.
Awards and Recognition Rochelle Schwartz reported on the fall celebrations for principal, school and teacher of the year respectively.

Board members were given copies of “This We Believe Successful Schools for Young Adolescents,” and the companion research book. Members are asked to read the first 35 pages before the next meeting where a discussion will take place.
