Connecticut Association of Schools Middle Level Professional Studies Committee Minutes October 21, 2004
In attendance were: Richard Dellinger, Sue Dumas, Diane Hartman Chesley, Charles Hines, Sandra Inga, John Lineen, Penny McCormack, Ralph White and Earle Bidwell
1.0 Exemplary Practice Teaming Letters were sent to NELMS Spotlight Schools winners inviting them to apply for the CAS designation. There were no NCLB middle school blue Ribbon winners this year.
2.0 Exemplary Practice Climate 2.1 Call for Papers were distributed and each committee member was challenged to either write or find at least one author for the next issue. An electronic version of the Call for Papers will accompany the minutes for distribution by administrators using faculty e-mail. 2.2 Work in Progress: 2.2.1 The first 11 items of the Climate Self-assessment were finalized. 2.2.2 The next five were discussed and draft language suggested. 2.2.3 The next 9 items were assigned to committee members to come up with draft language. The drafts can be e-mailed to the CAS office prior to the meeting to be included in the packet. Assignments are: Teacher and student dress (Sandi), Signs (Diane), Office staff (Ralph), Parking (Penny), School grounds ( Chip), Building cleanliness (Sue), Student work displayed (Richard), Welcoming (John), Transitions (Earle). 3.0 Assistant Executive Directors Report; 3.1 Earle reported on the successful middle level celebrations this fall in Berlin, Middletown and Montville. 3.2 The Winter Conference on January 28th will feature Katie Haycock from the Education Trust. The theme will be closing the achievement gap 3.3 Members are encouraged to participate in the Teens Sing Out program highlighting abstinence from risky behaviors.
