High School Board of Control Minutes from meeting of 11/1/2004
Connecticut Association of High School Principals Board Minutes November 1, 2004
Present: Joseph Bacewicz, Jeffrey Matthieu, Christine Mahoney, Robert Pitocco, Greg Shugrue, Dennis Carrithers
1. Bob Pitocco reviewed the CAS goals for 2004-2005 that were worked on by sub-groups at the last CAS Board meeting on October 14. Discussion followed on recruiting new members of boards and committees, encouraging colleagues to become active, and the format of the annual meeting.
2. Reactions and feedback on the High School Summit conference of October 19 was positive. Discussion followed on how to continue the focus and provide follow-up in cooperation with the State Department of Education. Suggestions included inviting Dr. Daggett back to Connecticut for more opportunities to work on technology, offering workshops on strands from Breaking Ranks II, connecting NEASC accreditation and Breaking Ranks II, offering programs on Literacy in the Content areas, developing regional workshops on technology, and using league structures to offer regional programs. The next Bulletin will feature an article summarizing other suggestions from Talk Back sessions conducted at the end of the conference for how CAS and CSDE can assist schools
3. Dennis updated the Board on the possibility of offering Breaking Ranks II training in Connecticut by participating in NASSP training and then conducting seminars for school administrators and other personnel who could then be qualified to communicate to their high school faculties the concepts of Breaking Ranks II. The Board agreed that we should have Breaking Ranks II as a multi-year theme for our initiatives with member high schools.
4. Topics for mini-conferences: the Board identified NEASC accreditation, a conversation with Betty Sternberg, literacy in the content areas, and technology as good topics for this years mini-conferences. Holding them at various regions of the state was a suggestion as well.
5. The report from the Program committee for the January 28 conference for middle and high schools reviewed the topics for breakout sessions: CAPT panels by schools that had shown substantial progress in math, science, writing and reading; a legal update by Tom Mooney; student advisor/advisee programs; a model for science education; high school student leaders presenting their perspectives. The brochure for the conference will be mailed to school early in December.
6. The next meeting will be on December 6, 2004, at 3:30 p.m. and will be a joint meeting with the Legislative Committee.
