Connecticut Student Activities Conference Board of Control
Minutes from meeting of 9/30/2004

Student Activities Board of Control
September 30, 2004
Summary

Present: Janet Garagliano, Chair; Richard Cavallaro, David Maloney, Kathleen McGrath, Barbara Miles, Howard Reed, Arlene Salvati, Joseph Scheideler, Steve Wysowski.
Mike Buckley, Staff.

1. New SABC members Barbara Miles and Howard Reed were welcomed.
2. SABC commitments included in the CAS strategic plan were reviewed. Of note for this year are guidelines for fundraising and foreign travel and organizing a service learning conference.
3. The board accepted with regret the resignation of Mary Leger as Executive director of CASC. Mike B. will recommend a letter of commendation to be presented at the annual meeting.
4. The use of the Mohegan Sun as a venue for a cheerleading competition was discussed. The board denied approval of an application from the New England Cheerleading Association to host a competition there in the spring. In so doing, they affirmed their commitment to the organizational practice of not scheduling CAS/CIAC events at either casino.
5. It was agreed that a work session would be conducted at the next SABC meeting to develop plans for a service learning conference. Steve Wysowski and Arlene Salvati agreed to co-lead this endeavor. Mike Buckley would investigate involving the State Student Advisory Council on Education (SSACE) via their Challenge to Educational Citizenship Award Program.
6. Mike Buckley pointed out that member schools were now required to list advisors for cheerleading, student council, NHS, debate, diversity club, drama, environmental club, newspaper, service club, and yearbook in the data base at the CASA website.
7. Liaisons to major activity areas were established as follows:
a. CASC – Arlene Salvati
b. CANHS – Steve Wysowski
c. CDA – Kathy McGrath
d. Middle Level Activities – Joe Scheideler
8. Given the volume of applications, it was agreed to separate cheer competitions from other activities on the approved list. The question of jurisdiction for dance competitions was raised. This will be referred to the SABC/CIAC Cheerleading Committee.
9. Renewal applications received since the end of the last school year were approved as follows:
