Middle Level Board of Control Minutes from meeting of 11/23/2004
Connecticut Association of Schools CEAE/CAMSP Boards of Directors Minutes November 23, 2004 In attendance were: Carole Alvaro, Thomas Heffernan, Carol Janssen, John Lineen, Barbara Ripa, Vaughn Ramseur, Barbara Ripa, Monita Leavitt. In the absence of the CAMSP and CEAE board chairs, Earle Bidwell facilitated the meeting
1.0 Scholar- Leader Keynote Speaker Update: Dr. Robert Spear from NELMS has accepted our invitation to be the keynote speaker. Despite having attended numerous banquets as an honored guest, he has not previously keynoted. 2.0 CAS/ Center Workshops: the differentiated instruction workshops offered by CEAE and taught by Monita Leavitt attracted 35 participants. The late afternoon format with a light supper seems to be popular and other similar workshops will be offered in the future. 3.0 Committee Reports 3.1 Professional Studies: John Lineen reported that the committee is well along in developing criteria for certifying schools with exemplary climate. Also, climate will be the focus topic for the next issue of IMPACT. Board members are encouraged to write or find writer with superior programs. 3.2 Program: Carol Janssen indicated that the registration material for the winter conference was mailed out today. Katie Haycock, a dynamic leader of the Education Trust is the keynote speaker and Dr. Theodore Sergi, Executive Director of the Center of Science and Technology will be the lunch speaker. 3.3 Honors and Awards: Earle Bidwell reported the results of a meeting between representative of this committee and the CAS Awards and Recognition Committee. Beginning next year, all principal and assistant principal honorees will be recognized at a single event in the fall. The venue will change from the Farmington Club to one that can accommodate larger numbers and all will receive the same recognition. The middle level committee will continue to honor schools and teachers in their own communities. 4.0 Principal of the Year Candidate: After considerable discussion, the Boards have unanimously selected a principal of the year candidate to send on to the CAS committee. The name will not be printed here pending acceptance of the nomination. 5.0 Eighth Grade Exit Exam: As previously requested by the board, Earle prepared a draft of a response to possible proposed legislation regarding an exit exam form eighth grade. The committee reviewed the draft and suggested some changes. The revised position paper is attached to the minutes for board members. 6.0 The remainder of the agenda was tabled to the next meeting which is scheduled for January 25, 2005.
