Connecticut Student Activities Conference Board of Control
Minutes from meeting of 12/2/2004

Student Activities Board of Control
December 2, 2004
Summary

Present: Richard Cavallaro, David Maloney, Barbara Miles, Arlene Salvati, Steve Wysowski.
Mike Buckley, Staff.

1. Mike Buckley reported that five applications had been filed for the vacant CASC Executive Director position. Interviews will be scheduled during December with an appointment to be made by the first of the year.
2. Arlene Salvati, CASC liaison, reported on a successful fall leadership conference at East Hartford High School on November 2nd. Over 400 students and advisors heard a dynamic keynote presentation by Keith Hawkins and participated in two rounds of student-led workshops. Evaluations were positive. Plans for the spring leadership conference are well under way. It will be held March 18-19, 2005 at Wesleyan University and the Inn at Middletown.
3. Steve Wysowski, CANHS liaison, reported that over ninety-five percent of the high schools in the state are now dues paying members, a positive result of the unified dues option in the CAS billing for this year. A large (55) delegation attended the national conference in St. Louis in November and the CT team performed well in the “quiz bowl” competition that is part of this event. A successful advisors conference was conducted in October though the combined format (with CASC) created some confusion and reduced the total number of NHS advisors attending. Better communication should alleviate this problem next year.
4. Mike Buckley reported for CDA liaison Kathy McGrath. Debate is off to a great start with successful tournaments hosted by Stamford High School and Amity High School. Four more are scheduled plus a state championship.
5. Sherrie Zembruzski, Co-Chair (with Jackie Sullivan) of the SABC/CIAC Cheerleading Committee gave the board a progress report on the trial period under the new regulations. So far this year the committee has reviewed 27 applications and approved 24. Last year only 17 were submitted for review and the year before that only 9. The new application and the online submission process are working well. Added this year was an information/clinic for coaches sponsored by the committee. Over 60 coaches attended. Sherrie was questioned about the bourgeoning interest in dance and whether or not her committee should also have jurisdiction over dance competitions. Should the Cheerleading Committee be a Spirit Committee with sub-committees devoted to cheer and dance? Dance is regulated by the National Federation under their spirit guidelines. Sherrie felt that SABC should meet with some of the coaches from schools with active dance programs. Principals are asking for guidance and the board has previously noted issues connected to dress, music, and routines of performing groups. The board also acknowledged that the growing interest in dance is a positive thing and that they want to be proactive. Mike Buckley will organize a meeting of dance coaches in January.
6. Continuing the discussion from the last board meeting pertaining to a service learning conference, Mike Buckley asked the board to consider a “Service Summit” modeled after the “Sportsmanship Summit” run by MIAA in MA. Participants in the CSDE’s Challenge to Educational Citizenship Awards program would be invited and the award winning schools (typically 15, 5 from each level) recognized. The Commissioner and Governor would be invited to speak and make the presentations. SABC already has a tie in to the Educational Citizenship program through the State Student Advisory Council on Education (SSACE) which selects the winners. Mike Buckley will develop a prospectus, solicit the involvement of CSDE, and seek a sponsor through the CAS Director of Development. The program could be run without a sponsor if only the 15 winning schools are recognized.
7. The Flanagan Grant application was reviewed and revised. Materials will be mailed to principals the first week in January with returns due by February 28, 2005. The applications will be reviewed at the SABC meeting on March 3, 2005.
8. A discussion was held about a request from Caroline Sinclair Casting for a broadcast email to high school music personnel seeking all-girl rock, pop, or punk bands for a national Coca-Cola commercial. The board approved the request contingent on a contact with Coca Cola verifying its legitimacy.
9. There were no new or renewal activity applications.
10. The next meeting of SABC is January 27, 2005.
