Minutes from meeting of 12/7/2004

Connecticut Association of Schools
Middle Level Leadership Conference Committee
Minutes
December 7, 2004
In attendance were: Carole Alvaro, Jody Goeler, Thomas Heffernan, Troy Monroe, Joe Scheideler and Earle Bidwell

1. Arthur Director Award: This year’s award was presented to East Hartford Middle School in a ceremony at the school attended by Arthur, Edyth Director and David Director from the CT Lighting Centers, Earle Bidwell and Janice Grecco from the CAS office and Mayor Timothy Larson. The ceremony was presided over by Principal Kate Carbone and featured speeches from some of the aforementioned, and by eighth grade students. The eighth grade was in attendance and there were musical selections by the school band.
2. Leadership Conference
a. Report on Change to Opening Activity: The services of Jennifer Buckley from Wesleyan University have been secured to plan and facilitate the opening activities for this year’s conference. Students will be assigned to one of 20 pods of 20 students each and will be engaged in “get to know you” activities and icebreakers. The committee expressed some concern about the space and requested that Janice and Earle determine the square footage of Alumni Hall and the adjacent corridors to be sure there is enough room for opening activities.
b. Ms. Buckley will also gather and train the required number of teams of high school students to facilitate the opening and some of the breakout sessions.
c. Advisor sessions: It was suggested that there be two advisor sessions of about one and one-half hours each. The first would run opposite the opening for students and the second to follow. Advisors would then be free for lunch and to visit students’ break-out sessions. It was determined that Jo Ann Freiberg from “Operation Respect” be invited to do the first session and that Troy Monroe from Keigwin Middle School assemble a team to present on the EBS “Effective Behavior Support” system for the second.
d. Video: It is hoped that the registration process cam be completed in time for schools to send e-mail pictures from their schools to create a video loop to be played as students enter.
3. Breakout Session
a. Past presenters have been invited to present again. To date we have received positive responses from a few.
b. The committee helped brainstorm ideas for a general “call for presenters” that Earle Bidwell will put out on the CAS “Newswire” and subsequently on the CAS website.
c. Large group sessions: Joe Scheideler reported that Joan Reskin will again bring the Canton Senior high Esteem Group to lead one of the large group sessions. As Judy Marks is no longer at Avon Middle School, their group will not be participating. Another group was suggested and Earle Bidwell will make a contact.

After the next meeting scheduled for January 4, 2005, members will make personal contacts with potential presenters as needed.
