1.0 Review of 2002 Arts in the Middle conference 1.1 Financial report: The cost of the conference was $7,326.83 Total receipts (including $800 still outstanding) were $2,900 for a net loss of $4,426.00 1.2 Feedback from committee members: Vaughn Ramseur and Barbara Repa reported only positive comments from all participants with whom they came in contact. Earle Bidwell reported that CAS executive staff was complimentary of all aspects of the conference. 1.3 Feedback from Hartford Art School. Dean, Robert Calafiore was enthusiastic in his praise of the conference and was anxious for us to return for a second year. 1.4 Suggestions for improvement. Mike Savage would like CAS to expand the enrollment so that no CAS member schools are denied entry for lack of space. Dean Calafiore suggested that we selectively make some of the session enrollments larger. A letter from a school that was denied participation suggested that we have two ½ day sessions.
2.0 Possible funding sources. University of Hartford may have some resources in the area of grant writing. Also, the Connecticut Foundation for the Arts will be coming out with RFPs shortly.
3.0 Artist pool: Dean Calafiore has offered to help expand the artist pool and to make a few more spaces available.
4.0 The committee decided the following: 4.1 Increase the participants from 144 to 216 by adding 3 artists and by creating larger groups in media where it would be appropriate 4.2 Reduce the team size to 1 teacher and 4 students 4.3 Allow schools with enrollments of 501 and up to send two teams 4.4 Maintain the $100 cost per team (effectively producing $5 more revenue per participant). 4.5 Eliminate breakfast and put that time into the work sessions 4.6 Explore making activities such as copper sculpture a double session.
5.0 Committee make-up. We need to increase the size of our working committee. A call for committee members will be processed by the CAS office either on the website, the Bulletin or a mailing.
