Connecticut Student Activities Conference Board of Control Minutes from meeting of 4/28/2005
Student Activities Board of Control April 28, 2005 Summary
Present: Janet Garagliano, Chair; Kathleen McGrath, Arlene Salvati, Steve Wysowski. Mike Buckley, Staff.
1. The 2004-2005 annual report for SABC was reviewed and approved.
2. Arlene Salvati, CASC liaison, reported on a successful spring leadership conference at Wesleyan University and the Inn at Middletown on March 18-19. 336 students and advisors participated. Keynote presentations by Judson Laipley, Dorothy Franco-Reed, and Dan Doyle were well received. Participants also experienced a team-building exercise, 2 rounds of student-led workshops, a diversity panel, and a service project (CUREchief). Evaluations were positive.
3. Steve Wysowski, CANHS liaison, reported that the spring conference will take place on May 26th. An attendance of 200 is anticipated.
4. Kathy McGrath reported that CDA has had a successful year. Growth continues with the largest number of p[participants yet. Limits have been set on the size of competing teams and they are not yet in a position to develop a middle level strand.
5. The board approved unanimously a motion to adopt on a permanent basis the present regulations governing cheerleading. The present on-line application and review process will also be maintained
6. The results of the unified billing process for 2004-2005 were extremely positive. 184 schools joined CANHS and 186 schools joined CASC.
7. The Flanagan Reception will be held on May 11th at 10:00 a.m. All 9 schools receiving a grant will be present.
8. The CAS 3 year strategic plan was reviewed. Priorities for next year include organizing dance and other spirit activities along the lines of cheerleading, promoting service learning, developing fundraising guidelines, and generating on-line a directory of advisors for all major activities.
9. The BBC Student Ethics Award program was approved pending modifications in the application process. Schools would be asked to verify student leadership and service activities.
10. A request from the CMEA to shift their March, 2006 All-State Music Festival from a Thursday p.m. through Saturday format to a Friday p.m. through Sunday format was denied. It was felt that maintaining the Thursday evening through Saturday format was acceptable even during CAPT testing. Relatively few sophomores qualify and, for those that do, most schools would allow the student to take the scheduled test on a make-up day.
11. It was reported that dance teams from Brookfield High School and Shelton High School participated in an unauthorized competition at the Mohegan Sun in March. Mike B. will contact both principals.
