2. Scholar Leader Banquet Keynote Speaker: Jody Goeler led a discussion regarding the selection of a keynote speaker for the Scholar/Leader Banquet. After a review of past speakers it was concluded that the first two choices would teachers with national connections. Earle Bidwell charged securing a speaker in the next week as both would be at the NMSA Convention. Back-up speakers would be two people on staff at NMSA.
3. Brainstorm Action Plans for Goals: Jody Goeler framed the two goal areas and led a brainstorming session regarding action steps for each goal.
a. NCLB, Advocacy and SDE Relationships: It was suggested that we open a dialogue with the State Department of Education. Also, helping districts move toward looking at other ways to assess students. NCLB will not go away soon so we need to find the positives and capitalize on them.
b. Teacher Services and CEAE Board Membership: It was suggested that for a future meeting, each board member “bring a buddy” as a means of introducing them to CAS and the opportunities available.
It was concluded that a roundtable breakfast or after-school session be initiated for principals and teachers. Concurrent sessions could be held with time to report out to the full group. Principal and teacher teams would be invited. In order for the meetings to be meaningful, they would need to be structured around significant questions. Each board member should bring three sample questions to the next meeting. We will “try out” the questions and the format.
4. Roundtable: Jody introduced an article from Gene Carter, Executive Director of ASCD and led a discussion of this article promoting advocacy.
5. Assistant Executive Director’s Report: Earle Reported on an initiative with SCSU to place student interns in high level middle schools with good teachers as a means of piquing interest in undergraduate teaching candidates.
