Connecticut Student Activities Conference Board of Control Minutes from meeting of 10/27/2005
Student Activities Board of Control October 27, 2005 Summary
Present: Janet Garagliano, Chair; Sam Galloway, Sue Homrok, Kathleen McGrath, Barbara Miles, Steve Wysowski, Dennis Carrithers
1. Dance Coaches Kathy Swillinger and Kathy Cavanaugh from Hamden High School presented on behalf of dance coaches a proposal to have SABC recognize and approve dance competitions similar to the process used by cheerleading competitions. They presented a list of schools in Connecticut that currently have dance teams. While cheerleading and dance often have competitions at the same event, there is enough of a difference that dance coaches would prefer to have their own recognition. The coaches advocated having similar safety provisions and use of national rules to the regulations cheerleading competitions follow. Dennis will work further with a committee of dance coaches to come back to SABC with a proposal at a later date.
2. The board discussed the goal of encouraging schools to have students engage in service learning or community service projects. North Branford High School had requested information in a CAS email survey to determine the number of high schools that required community service for graduation. About 11% of high schools in the state have such a requirement. The board discussed options, including liability and record keeping. The board is interested in serving as a clearinghouse of information that would be available to schools interested in community service. One option to be explored at the December meeting is use of the CAS website to have the information assembled and accessible to schools.
