More than fifty administrators celebrated the advent of the new school year at the annual Back-to-School Picnic at the CAS Office on August 17th. The event was both a social and professional gathering and included a legal update by Attorney Thomas Mooney of Shipman & Goodwin LLC. Following a short briefing on newly-enacted education-related legislation, colleagues swapped vacation stories and relayed their hopes for the coming school year while enjoying burgers and dogs fresh from the grill.

Attorney Mooney summarized a number of newly enacted bills and discussed how they would impact administrators in the day-to-day operation of their schools. He also reviewed several recent judicial decisions and discussed their implications for Connecticut’s school administrators. The statutes reviewed concerned such critical issues as: administration of medication to students; school transportation; certification requirements for bilingual educators; use of pesticides at schools; and DCF investigations. Many thanks to our grill-master, Bristol Eastern’s Ev Lyons, and to the event organizer, Janet Garagliano, principal of Jonathan Law High School in Milford.
