Golf Committee Reviews Data From Survey

The CIAC Golf Committee reviewed and acted upon the results of a survey at their January 27th meeting. The survey was conducted to gather information on a request from the SWC to move boys golf to the fall season.

All principals, athletic directors and coaches in schools offering golf as a sport were invited to participate in the survey. A total of 285 responded to the survey representing 114 athletic directors, 94 coaches and 77 principals.

The results indicate that 60 respondents (21%) were in favor of moving both the boys and girls season to the fall; 91 respondents (32%) were in favor of moving the boys only to the fall season; and, 134 respondents (47%) were in favor of moving neither and to have boys and girls golf remain as a spring sport. The committee reviewed and discussed the results in detail and determined there was no clear mandate from member schools to change seasons as requested. Additionally, the committee discussed information from the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) in Boston that in their opinion the reason stated to move boys golf to the fall should also apply to girls playing golf. This opinion was reaffirmed by Beth Downs of OCR on January 20, 2010.

Consequently, given the data from the survey and the opinion provided by OCR, the committee voted to deny the request of the Southwest Conference and to keep both boys and girls golf in the spring season.
