WATERBURY - Max DeLorenzo scored four touchdowns and accounted for over 380 yards of offense Sunday to lead the Berlin High football team to a 46-6 trouncing of Bethel in the Class M final at Municipal Stadium to cinch the school's first state title.

Berlin (10-2) dominated from the start, taking the opening kickoff 60 yards in 14 plays despite three minor penalties. DeLorenzo capped the drive with a two-yard run.

On the Redcoats' second drive, DeLorenzo carried on eight of the nine plays and scored from the 3. Bethel converted its initial first down early in the second quarter but fumbled. When Berlin's ensuing drive stalled, Devin Silverman booted a 36-yard field goal.

DeLorenzo scored his third touchdown of the first half on a 35-yard pass from Dan Hackett to give Berlin a 25-0 halftime lead.

Bethel (9-3) scored its lone touchdown in the third quarter when quarterback Bill Ramirez hit Javier Reyes for a 71-yard catch and run.

Peter Gallagher ran 31 times for 186 yards and three touchdowns as fourth-seeded Bethel beat top-seeded New London, 34-12, in a CIAC Class M semifinal.

Will Ramirez threw a 28-yard touchdown to Brandon Schmidt and ran for an 8-yard touchdown for Bethel (9-2).

Nick Singleton had five catches for 147 yards and a touchdown for the Whalers (10-1) and Craig Dysart added five catches for 95 yards and a touchdown.

BRISTOL, Dec. 1 - Berlin's Max DeLorenzo rushed for a game-high 265 yards on 36 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead No. 3 Berlin to a 35-28 victory over Avon in a Class M semifinal game at Muzzy Field in Bristol.

Berlin took advantage of two turnovers by the Falcons in the second quarter to help build a 35-7 lead. Leading 14-0, Berlin's Zach Parsons scooped up a Ross McDonald fumble and rambled 50 yards with 10:40 left in the second quarter. On Avon's next offensive play, Berlin's Zach Zulkiewicz stripped the ball from Avon QB Andrew Livingstone and Berlin's Geoff Dansro recovered.

Ten plays later, Berlin took a 28-0 lead when QB Dan Hackett found DeLorenzo wide open in the end zone on fourth and goal from the eight-yard line with 6:02 remaining.

Avon (10-1) got on the scoreboard when Ross McDonald scored from the one with 1:52 left in the second quarter but Berlin responded immediately when DeLorenzo scored on a 67-yard run for a 35-7 lead.

McDonald (24 carries for 149 yards in the game) scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter as Avon cut the lead to seven, 35-28. Avon stopped Berlin on a fourth-and-two play on the Redcoats 44-yard line with 1:50 remaining in the game to get the ball back. But Berlin's Sean Roche intercepted a Livingstone pass with 1:17 remaining to seal the victory.
